Director Edgar Wright paid tribute on Twitter, writing: "Max Von Sydow, such an iconic presence in cinema for seven decades, it seemed like he'd always be with us.

"He changed the face of international film with Bergman, played Christ, fought the devil, pressed the HOT HAIL button and was Oscar nominated for a silent performance. A god."

Von Sydow was nominated for two Oscars during his illustrious career - including Best Actor in 1998 for Pelle the Conqueror. His other Academy nomination was for Best Supporting Actor for his role in 2011's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

Bond fans will also know him as the iconic Ernst Stavro Blofeld in 1983's Never Say Never Again, alongside Sean Connery.

Per Variety, the actor once said of his antagonist roles: "Because I am a Swede, not an Englishman or an American, the parts I’m offered are always foreigners. And there aren’t that many American films with nice foreigners. Mostly they’re villains, and villains are usually too much cliche."

Our thoughts at this time are with his family, fans, and loved ones.
