Tragically, his family confirmed his unexpected death on March 12, leaving his loved ones and fans devastated.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of my brother Douglas Kiker,” his sister Angela Evans wrote in an emotional Facebook post.

“He was sooo loved and will be missed by so many! Your singing with the Angel's now Bubba.”

His mother, Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez, also shared her heartbreak, writing: “Today I got the call that no one wants to get. We lost an amazing person today. He had the biggest smile and knew how to make you laugh.”

Doug Kiker first won over audiences in 2020 when he stepped onto the American Idol stage as a sanitation worker from Alabama.

With zero vocal training, Doug wowed judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Katy Perry with his raw talent and powerful voice, performing 'Bless the Broken Road' by Rascal Flatts.

His performance left Katy Perry in tears, who told him: “That was not garbage. It was greatness. You just stay who you are and you’re going to go so far. And you’re going to take your daughter to all the highest heights.”

Doug advanced past his audition but was eliminated during Hollywood Week after struggling with song choice. Despite the early exit, his humble personality and inspirational story made him one of the most memorable contestants of the season.

“I just don’t want to let my family down… I’ve been a good man my whole life,” he had said at the time.

Looking back on his time on American Idol, Doug had remained grateful for the opportunity, saying: “I think I did pretty well for it being my first time.”

Doug’s cause of death has not been revealed, but his sister Angela confirmed that he passed away in Denver, Colorado. His family is now facing the heartbreaking challenge of bringing him back to Alabama for a proper farewell.

“As this was completely unexpected we are completely unprepared and are gonna need a little help getting him home from Denver, Colorado, and being able to give the memorial that not only he but anyone deserves.”

His brother William Kiker also shared a touching tribute on Facebook, writing: “Dear brother, I just want you to know that no matter where you are, you will always be my baby brother. I just wish I had more time with you. Until I can see you again, say hey to Bubba for me and tell him I love him. Rest in peace, Douglas Kiker, my baby brother.”

Doug leaves behind two children, whom he shared with his ex-fiancée Valerie Cook. Speaking to TMZ, Valerie expressed deep sadness over his passing.

“I hate that our daughters have lost their father.”

A GoFundMe page has been created to help with funeral expenses, with the goal of raising $4,500 to bring Doug home and give him the farewell he deserves.

“Help Us Lay Our Loved One to Rest. It is with heavy hearts that we have to say goodbye to one of the most sincere souls and most hilarious person of all.”

The fundraiser describes Doug as a “beloved son, brother, father, and friend” and urges supporters to contribute, stating: “Any contribution, no matter the amount, will go directly to the funeral costs and allow us to navigate this difficult time without the added financial burden.”

So far, the campaign has raised over $3,700, with donations continuing to pour in.
