Breaking Bad star says RJ Mitte was struggling before his death
Luis Moncada revealed details about his final days spent with fellow actor RJ Mitte before Mitte died by suicide.
The two actors worked together on the television series Breaking Bad. Moncada, who portrayed Marco Salamanca, reconnected with Mitte at a charity golf tournament over a week prior to his passing.
Following that event, they attended a comedy show along with Steven Quezada, another co-star from the show.
Moncada told TMZ Live that he noticed a shift in Mitte's attitude during their time together. He described Mitte as really tired and sad, observing that he appeared distracted and weighed down.
To help lift his spirits, Moncada invited him to go on a hot air balloon ride at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta the following day.
During the outing, Mitte seemed conflicted and overwhelmed by personal stress. Moncada attempted to offer support and cheer him up throughout the day.
He recognized that Mitte was dealing with heavy pressure, though he chose not to disclose the specific issues Mitte discussed with him.
Moncada recalls their final conversation
Reflecting on their last interaction, Moncada became emotional while describing their final conversation. He invited Mitte to spend a couple of days staying with him and his son so he would not have to deal with his difficulties alone. Mitte declined the offer, but Moncada urged him to call as soon as he returned home.
That expected phone call never arrived. Moncada expressed deep sorrow over the outcome, noting that Mitte had previously supported him through a difficult period just a few months earlier. Moncada praised Mitte as a sweet and loyal friend who offered assistance whenever others were in need.
Moncada shared a video on Instagram showing moments from their recent hot air balloon ride. In the video, Mitte rested his head on Moncada's shoulder while both of them laughed together in the basket. Moncada captioned the post with a message of affection, writing, "Rest in Peace RJ – I Love you Lil Brother ❤️," alongside photos featuring Mitte and members of the cast from over the years.
Tributes from the Breaking Bad cast
Mitte portrayed Walter "Flynn" White Jr. across all five seasons of Breaking Bad. Following the news of his death at age 34, several of his former cast members shared public tributes honoring his memory and his work as an advocate for disability rights.
Bryan Cranston, who played his father on the series, expressed his grief online. He shared his thoughts on Mitte's work ethic and character: "Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination." Cranston added that they had texted a few weeks prior to plan a lunch together, wondering, "I don't know if that lunch would have changed his future."
Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman, released a statement expressing his heartbreak over the loss. He shared: "I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend." He added, "You will be missed. And to whoever happens to be reading this, please know you are loved, and you are not alone. Always remember that."
