A judge has ended the conservatorship which has controlled Britney Spears' personal, professional and financial matters for more than 13 years.

Earlier this year, the 'Toxic' singer, 39, asked Judge Brenda Penny to terminate the controversial arrangement, which was set up by her father Jamie in 2008 at the height of her mental health struggles.

The decision to end the guardianship comes after Jamie, 69, was removed from his position as conservator in September as the court sought a complete end to the conservatorship.

Ahead of her appearance in the monumental court hearing, Britney's fiancé Sam Asghari shared an Instagram video featuring the singer wearing a white T-shirt adorned with the hashtag FreeBritney and the words: "It's a human rights movement."

This past summer, the #FreeBritney movement came to a head as the singer spoke out publicly against her father and the conservatorship in an explosive court testimony.

In the first hearing on June 23, in which the 'Gimme More' chart-topper appeared virtually, Britney referred to the conservatorship as "abusive".

She told the judge she had been prohibited from getting married and having a baby and was not permitted to remove her IUD.

Britney said at the time: "I was told right now in the conservatorship, I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an [IUD] inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant. I wanted to take the [IUD] out so I could start trying to have another baby.

"But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children - any more children. So basically, this conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good."

She even said that her father and "anyone involved in this conservatorship" should be incarcerated.

The Crossroads star also claimed that she was "forced to take Lithium" as a "punishment".

She said: "Lithium is very very strong, it’s a completely different medication to what I was used to. You can go mentally impaired if you take too much or stay on it longer than five months.

"I felt drunk, I really couldn't even [look after myself], I couldn't even have a conversation with my mom and dad really about anything. I am traumatized. I just want my life back."

In another court appearance on July 16, Britney told the judge that she has "always been scared" of her dad's drinking.

She said: "I've always been scared of my dad. I was scared he would show up drunk. I counted and in one week alone, I was abandoned 63 times by all of my family members as I sat in the trailer and watched them leave from the window."

In September, yet more allegations centering around Jamie came to the fore as a documentary released by The New York Times, titled Controlling Britney Spears, claimed that he arranged for his famous daughter's messages and calls to be tracked, and secretly taped conversations she had in her bedroom.

Per Variety, Britney's attorney is working on an investigation into her father amid the allegations.
