Chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky's cause of death aged 29 revealed
American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky’s death at the age of 29 has shocked the chess community. A toxicology report released on January 21, 2026, confirmed that several drugs were found in his system at the time of his death.
Naroditsky, who was discovered lifeless at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, by his friend and fellow grandmaster Oleksandr Bortnyk on October 19, 2025, had methamphetamine, amphetamine, as well as compounds from Kratom—mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine—present in his body, People reports.
While the circumstances surrounding his death raised questions, police found no signs of foul play, leaving some to believe it could have been an accidental overdose or even suicide.
The toxicology results indicate a mix of synthetic stimulants and substances with opioid-like effects. Methamphetamine and amphetamine are both known for their addictive qualities, while Kratom, which is not federally controlled but flagged by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has been linked to psychological dependence in frequent users. The combination of these substances in Naroditsky’s system points to a possible drug-related death.
Allegations of cheating and emotional toll
Naroditsky had been under immense stress for much of the year leading up to his death. Russian chess grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik accused him multiple times of cheating in online matches, claiming Naroditsky had used chess engines to assist in his play.
The allegations created a significant emotional strain, as Naroditsky denied all accusations, maintaining that his reputation as a chess player was vital to him. In an interview, his mother, Elena Naroditsky, expressed the toll this took on her son, telling the Daily Mail, “There was nothing more important to Daniel than his dignity and his name as a chess player."
According to Elena, Daniel had planned to visit his family the week after his death and was looking forward to celebrating his birthday. This led his mother to believe that his death was accidental rather than intentional.
Kramnik’s controversial response
Vladimir Kramnik faced backlash after Naroditsky’s passing, with many accusing him of causing further harm by publicly continuing to suggest the tragedy might not have been an accident.
Kramnik, in an online post, stated, "Without a doubt, this recent tragedy should be investigated by police. There are too many huge financial interests involved to be sure about it being just an incident." The Russian grandmaster also faced death threats as a result of his ongoing comments. His remarks have continued to stir tensions in the chess community.
Despite the controversy, Kramnik extended his condolences to Naroditsky’s family, calling his death a tragedy for the entire chess community. This situation has led to ongoing debates about the pressures faced by professional players and the emotional toll that public accusations and personal struggles can have on individuals.
