Dana Carvey has issued a statement to fans following the untimely death of his son, Dex.

Earlier this week, the Wayne's World star revealed that his family had suffered a "terrible tragedy" after it was announced that his 32-year-old son, Dex, had died.

PEOPLE reports that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Dex died at his home, with his parents revealing that his passing was due to an "accidental drug overdose".

Now, a grieving Dana Carvey has revealed that he will be taking a break from the spotlight following the heartbreaking news.

Writing in a message to fans on Saturday (November 18), the 68-year-old comedy legend started by saying: "This is just to say thank you."

The SNL star went on to express that both he and Dex's mom, Paula Zwagerman, have been "overwhelmed" by the "beautiful messages" of love and compassion that fans have shared.

"These touched us more than we could ever express in words," he continued.

"I will be taking a break from work and social media — trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3," he wrote. "We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way."

Carvey and Zwagerman also shared a younger son; 30-year-old Thomas.

In repsonse to Carvey's message, many fans replied with messages of support on X (formerly known as Twitter), with one person writing: "I will continue to pray for healing and strength for your family. Thank you for all the happiness and smiles you've given to millions of us through the years. Much love and compassion sent from my home to yours."

A second expressed: "You're still a family of 4. Just because you can't see him, doesn't mean he isn't there. He is your heavenly child. If there is one thing I've learned in this life-- it's that this is not the end. We go on."

In his original announcement to fans, Dana and Paula said in a joint statement: "Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things--music, art, film making, comedy--and pursued all of them passionately."

"It's not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life," they added.

“And when you were with him, you loved life too," their statement continued. "He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee.

"Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

Like his father, Dex also had the opportunity to showcase his talent in the entertainment industry - appearing alongside dad Dana in several TV series. His credits include roles in The Funster (2013), Beyond The Comics (2014), and Carpool Pandering (2016)

Our thoughts continue to go out to Dex's loved ones at this time.
