'General Hospital' actor Doug Sheehan dies aged 75

Doug Sheehan, a veteran soap actor and star of General Hospital, has sadly passed away aged 75.

Sheehan, a beloved actor known for his roles in iconic soap operas, "passed away peacefully" on June 29.

The actor passed at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming, "with his loving wife at his side," according to a statement from Kane Funeral Home.

Sheehan gained fame for his performances in "General Hospital" and "Knots Landing," with over 100 episodes in each series to his credit.

Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1949, Sheehan began his acting career with a guest role in a 1978 episode of Charlie’s Angels.

He soon became a household name as lawyer Joe Kelly on General Hospital, appearing in 205 episodes from 1979 to 1982.

His work on the show earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series.

Following his success on General Hospital, Sheehan joined the cast of CBS’s Dallas spinoff Knots Landing, portraying reporter Ben Gibson in over 100 episodes from 1983 to 1988.

He left the show during its eighth season, with his character departing for South America.

In addition to his television work, Sheehan appeared in three films: 10 (1979), Victor/Victoria (1982), and Cops n Roberts (1995).

During the 1990s, Sheehan portrayed Cher’s father in the Clueless television series and starred in the comedy Day by Day, created by Andy Borowitz and Gary David Goldberg, which aired on NBC from 1988 to 1989.

He also made guest appearances on popular shows such as Cheers, Columbo, MacGyver, and Diagnosis Murder.

Sheehan's final screen roles came in 2003, with appearances in What I Like About You and Sabrina The Teenage Witch, where he played Sabrina’s father, Edward Gibson.

No cause of death has been confirmed.

Tributes have flooded in for Sheehan, with one former colleague writing on X: "Very sad to hear that Doug Sheehan has died.

"He passed away peacefully June 29 at his home in Big Horn. He was a sweet man and a joy to work with on Day by Day, a comedy series starring Julia Louise Dreyfus, created by Andy Borowitz and Gary David Goldberg, which aired for two seasons on NBC from 1988-89."

A fan of Sheehan's wrote: "Sorry to see that General Hospital and Knots Landing alum #DougSheehan has passed. I met him at a press event many years ago, and I recall him being just as amiable as his on-screen persona suggested he was."
