Johnny Brown has died at the age of 84, his family has revealed.
The beloved actor and singer is perhaps best known for his role as building superintendent Nathan Bookman in 1970s CBS sitcom, Good Times.
The news of Brown's passing was confirmed by his daughter, Broadway star Sharon Catherine Brown, who shared a tribute to her late father on Instagram Friday evening.
"Our family is devastated. Devastated. Devastated. Beyond heartbroken. Barely able to breathe," she wrote.
"We respectfully ask for privacy at this time because we need a minute to process the unthinkable," she continued. "To articulate the depths of profound sadness. This is my mom’s husband for sixty-one years, mine and JJ’s dad, Elijah and Levi’s Pop Pop, older brother to George and brother in law to Pat and extended family to Chris, Hihat, Damian and Derell.
"It’s too terrible. It will never not be. It’s a shock. He was literally snatched out of our lives. It’s not real for us yet. So there will be more to say but not now. Dad was the absolute best. We love him so very much."
Brown joined the cast of Good Times in its second season back in 1974, and would go on to become a main character of the show until its sixth and final season in 1979.
Fans may also recognize him from sitcoms like Sister, Sister, Kenan & Kel, and Everybody Hates Chris. Brown also provided his vocal talents for the 1983 Alvin & the Chipmunks animated shorts.
Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1937, Brown enjoyed success in the music industry early in his life after touring with Sam "The Man" Taylor in 1958.
In 1961, he released his first record with Columbia at the age of 23.
