Jim Carrey has announced his intentions to step away from his acting career.

The legendary actor shared the revelation during a recent interview while promoting his upcoming movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Carrey sat down with Hollywood Access host Kit Hoover to discuss the movie, but also said that it would "probably" be his last.

After Hoover had raised the possibility of Carrey playing Dolly Parton's music partner, Porter Wagoner, on the big screen, Carrey replied: "Well, I love Dolly Parton. I think Dolly Parton... we were born in different eras and it's a shame. Because I'd have chased her."

The interview can be seen in the video below:

"And you would have caught her," Hoover replies, before adding: "Wait, is that unbelievable though? She wants you. Would you do it?"

However, 60-year-old Carrey - speaking calmly - then revealed: "Well, I'm retiring. But... uh-"

Taken aback, Hoover interrupts, saying: "No?"

"Yeah, probably," the Dumb & Dumber star replied.

After Hoover asked if he was "being serious", Carrey went on to say: "I'm being fairly serious, yeah."

Carrey then suggested what it would take to make him change his mind, saying: "It depends, if the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink that says to me that it's gonna be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I'm taking a break."

"I really like my quiet life," he adds. "I really like putting paint on canvas. and I really love my spiritual life.

"I feel like - and I feel like this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists - I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough."

After making his stand-up comedy debut at the age of 15 in 1977, a young Carrey continued to try to break into showbusiness by auditioning for shows like Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show.

In 1983, he moved to Hollywood, and finally had his big break when he landed a role on NBC's The Duck Factory, and then later in the year, was able to debut his impressionist act on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Carrey would go on to become an international household name after a string of major comedy successes throughout the 90s - starring in hits like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, Dumb & Dumber, Batman Forever, Ace Ventura: Went Nature Calls, The Cable Guy, and Liar Liar.

In 1998, he was recognized for his ability to blend comedy with drama, when he starred in the acclaimed movie The Truman Show.

Since then, he has gone on to appear in a number of beloved titles, such as Man on the Moon, Me, Myself & Irene, Bruce Almighty, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Yes Man, and the video game movies, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2.

If this is the end of Carrey's acting career, we can only thank him for all the laughs. But, as a fan, I really hope somebody is able to deliver that "script that's written in gold ink".
