John Travolta has paid tribute to his late Grease co-star, Olivia Newton-John.

On Monday, it was announced in a statement from Newton-John's husband, John Easterling, that the beloved actor had sadly passed away.

Per BBC News, the statement read: "Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer," the statement said.

"We ask that everyone please respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time."

Easterling confirmed that his late wife had passed away at her California ranch on Monday morning.

Despite being a hugely successful multi-platinum singer-songwriter, it was perhaps Newton-John's role in the 1978 movie Grease that cemented her legacy in the hearts of her fans.

In the movie, Newton-John played the prim and proper Sandy Olsson, a high school senior whose family moves from Australia to the United States. After enrolling in her new school, the blonde beauty is welcomed by the popular Pink Ladies girl gang and reunited with her summer vacation fling, Danny Zuko - played by John Travolta.

Newton-John and Travolta had undeniable chemistry together, and were a huge reason Grease went on to become the highest-grossing musical film ever at the time. Together, they even topped the singles charts with their rendition of 'You're The One That I Want'.

(In fact, 'You're the One That I Want' and 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' were the only two songs in the movie that songwriter John Farrar wrote specifically for Newton-John's appearance in the film, with the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.)

Following the news of Newton-John's passing, Travolta has taken to social media to pay tribute to his late co-star and friend.

Sharing a photo of a young Newton-John to Instagram, Travolta captioned the post: "My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible.

"I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!

"Your Danny, your John!"

Speaking about her friendship with Travolta, Newton-John said in an interview with Hollywood Life last year: "[John and I] been through a huge, incredible experience together and we care about each other and we’ll always be friends."

Our thoughts continue to go out to Newton-John's family, friends, and fans at this time.
