A contestant taking part in the popular reality TV show Married At First Sight (MAFS) has alleged that they were sexually assaulted by their partner during filming of the show, prompting a police investigation.

According to The Sun, the allegation was made after the contestant returned from a honeymoon trip arranged by the UK version of the show, which airs on Channel 4.

Due to legal restrictions, the identities of those involved have not been disclosed.

In a statement to The Sun, police confirmed: “We received a report of a non-recent sexual assault on June 14. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

The incident is alleged to have taken place during the filming of one of the show’s dinner party segments, a format staple of the series, which sees newly matched couples navigate relationships in a televised social setting.

A spokesperson for the programme said: “We are aware that a report has been made to police about an alleged sexual assault during the filming of a dinner party. We take any issues on the show incredibly seriously. Producers follow strict welfare protocols, as the wellbeing of the cast is always the first priority.

“Support would be offered to anyone who wished to report a matter to the authorities, and naturally we would cooperate with any enquiries or investigations.”

An unnamed source described the situation as deeply troubling for producers. “It’s a nightmare scenario for them,” the source told The Sun. “The show’s been criticised for throwing strangers together and sending them on honeymoon for viewers’ entertainment. Now it’s alleged someone was assaulted after tying the knot. It is a disastrous look for bosses.”

The development is the latest controversy for the reality show, which has faced growing scrutiny over its casting and safeguarding practices. Earlier this year, the UK's Channel 4 faced criticism for including a contestant in the latest season despite concerns about his past.

Alexander Henry remained on the series despite public calls for his removal following claims related to domestic abuse. Channel 4 defended the decision at the time, stating that appropriate background checks had been conducted and “returned clear,” according to BBC News.

The current investigation into the alleged assault remains active. Channel 4 and production company CPL Productions have not provided further comment beyond their initial statement.

Married At First Sight, a reality dating show in which participants agree to marry someone "selected by relationship experts", has seen rising popularity in recent years, but has also faced questions over the risks associated with pairing strangers in high-pressure, televised environments.
