According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, the 66-year-old Kill Bill star cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split.

The documents revealed that the couple separated shortly after the tragic death of their 26-year-old son, Hudson, who died by suicide on January 25, 2022.

The divorce petition, filed on Tuesday, September 17, in Los Angeles, details the couple's history, stating they were married on April 15, 1996.

However, in a statement attached to the legal filing, Madsen accused DeAnna of contributing to their son’s death, claiming her "neglect, drinking and alcoholism" played a role.

Madsen added that the term "irreconcilable differences" did "not adequately describe" the reasons behind his decision to file for divorce.

Madsen also described their relationship as "abusive" and "toxic," further claiming that DeAnna’s actions worsened his own personal struggles.

"Respondent also significantly contributed to my personal issues as well. I am a victim in an abusive, co-dependent, and toxic relationship that culminated in the Respondent breaking into my residence and having me wrongfully arrested for DV [domestic violence]," Madsen wrote in his statement.

Madsen’s divorce filing follows a recent domestic violence incident. Last month, the actor was arrested in Malibu after what was described as a "disagreement" with his wife.

The arrest occurred shortly after midnight on August 17, when officers from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station responded to a call and took Madsen into custody for a domestic battery misdemeanor.

He was booked at 1:40AM and released later after posting a $20,000 bond.

In a statement to Variety, a representative for Madsen explained the incident as "a disagreement between Michael and his wife, which we hope resolves positively for them both."

In response, DeAnna shared her thoughts through The Hollywood Reporter, stating, "Michael is struggling with his own personal issues. Myself and our children have been supporting him to the best of our ability. We would request privacy at this time."

The couple’s relationship has faced intense scrutiny since the tragic death of their son, Hudson. Earlier this year, Madsen opened up about Hudson’s death in a statement to The Los Angeles Times.

“I am in shock as my son, whom I just spoke with a few days ago, said he was happy — my last text from him was ‘I love you dad,’” Madsen shared at the time.

“I didn’t see any signs of depression. It’s so tragic and sad. I’m just trying to make sense of everything and understand what happened,” he added.

Hudson had been living in Hawaii with his wife, Carlie, since 2019. The couple had relocated to the island of Oahu, where they were building their life together.

In addition to Hudson, Madsen and DeAnna share two other sons, Calvin, 27, and Luke, 18. Madsen also has two older sons, Christian, 34, and Max, 30, from a previous relationship with Jeannine Bisignano.
