Nicole Kidman has to overcome feeling 'broken' after split from Keith Urban

After nearly two decades of marriage, Nicole Kidman is learning to find her footing again.

Less than two weeks after filing for divorce from Keith Urban, the 58-year-old actress and AMC Theatres brand ambassador is opening up about resilience, pain, and the wisdom that comes with age.

In a new Harper’s Bazaar interview published October 9, Kidman reflected on what she values most about growing older, and how experience is helping her navigate one of the most challenging chapters of her life.

“The best part is the experiences that you've accumulated,” she shared. “You go, ‘Oh, I’ve been here before. I actually know how to handle this now.’ Or maybe I haven’t been in this place, but I’ve experienced something similar, and I do know that I will get through it.”

“You’re going to feel broken – but it passes”

While Kidman didn’t directly mention Urban or their recent split, her words carried the weight of someone processing deep emotional pain.

“There’s something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through,” she said.

“You’re not going to be able to numb it. You are going to have to feel it, and it’s going to feel insurmountable at times.

"You’re going to feel like you’re broken, but if you move gently and slowly, and it can take an enormous amount of time, it does pass.”

Her message reflects a woman grounded in hard-earned perspective, one who has faced loss and learned that healing requires time, honesty, and patience.

Motherhood gives Kidman her purpose

For Kidman, the greatest motivation to stay strong lies in motherhood.

The Big Little Lies star shares daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, with Urban, as well as adult children Bella, 32, and Connor, 30, with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

“My children give me the purpose of being their protector and their guide,” she told Bazaar.

“Promising them that I'm here and that, no matter what, there’s always a safe place to grow up in.”

Inside Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s split

Kidman officially filed for divorce from Urban on September 30, one day after news broke that the couple had been living apart since early summer.

Sources told E! News that Kidman initially tried to repair the marriage before deciding to move forward with the filing.

According to court documents obtained by E! News, the pair signed a co-parenting agreement that designates Kidman as the primary residential parent, with their daughters spending 306 days a year with her and 59 with Urban.

The former couple agreed to share joint custody and not to pay child support.

Despite their separation, the agreement emphasizes mutual respect: “They will not speak badly of each other… They will encourage each child to continue to love the other parent.”

Nicole Kidman finds wisdom in moving forward

Though the heartbreak is still fresh, Kidman’s words suggest that she’s channeling her pain into growth. For her, resilience isn’t about denial, it’s about acceptance.

“It’s going to feel like you’re broken,” she said, “but it does pass.”

With grace, wisdom, and the support of her children, Nicole Kidman is proving that even after love ends, strength — and healing — can begin again.
