Tributes are pouring in for Paul Roberts – the choreographer who helped shape the performances of One Direction, Steps, and even Harry Styles – after his death at the age of 52.
Roberts passed away peacefully on Friday evening, surrounded by his loved ones, following what his family described as a “courageous battle with cancer.”
In a statement shared on social media, his heartbroken relatives wrote (per The Sun): “Yesterday evening, after a courageous battle with cancer, Paul passed away gently at home, surrounded by his family. His departure, much like his life, was filled with grace. RIP.”
Tributes from stars
Friends and collaborators from across the music and entertainment world have paid tribute to Roberts, who was regarded as one of the industry’s most gifted creative minds.
Strictly Come Dancing star Layton Williams wrote: “One of the kindest, most beautiful souls. Was an honour to know and have worked for you Paul. Sleep well beautiful man.”
Steps’ Ian “H” Watkins also shared his heartbreak, saying: “Devastated. What an incredible human Paul was. Sending [tons] of love.”
Louis Tomlinson’s sister Lottie responded with a broken heart emoji, while Girls Aloud’s Kimberley Walsh added: “This is the saddest news. I’m so, so sorry. Paul was very special indeed. Sending you all my love.”
A legacy in pop
Roberts’ work touched millions of fans across the globe. He was the creative force behind some of One Direction’s most iconic music videos, including 'Best Song Ever' and 'Kiss You', helping cement the boy band’s place as global superstars.
He also worked with Harry Styles on his 'Treat People With Kindness' music video, which went on to win the MTV VMA for Best Choreography in 2021.
Reflecting on his time with One Direction in an interview with the BBC, Roberts once said: “It was always really interesting working with One Direction. I knew very early on that there was a magic about them… They’d mess around doing silly dance moves but I’d think, ‘Actually if you wanted to dance really well you sure as hell could do it.’”
His creativity and warmth made him a favourite among artists, crews, and fans alike, with many remembering not only his talent but also his kindness.
