Medas, who appeared on the hit series from 2017 to 2021, was diagnosed with necrotizing pancreatitis, a severe and potentially life-threatening condition.
He’s been on a ventilator in intensive care since April 18, according to emotional updates shared by co-stars Nilsa Prowant and Aimee Elizabeth Hall.
“The situation is incredibly serious,” Hall wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post on May 1, alongside a photo of Medas unconscious in his hospital bed, hooked up to life support.
The post also included throwback snaps of the Floribama Shore gang during better times.
“He is sedated and this could take some time to heal. We are praying that he has a full recovery but this process could take some time,” added Prowant, who has been traveling “back and forth to Miami” to stay close to her longtime friend.
“I did fly down there and see him,” she shared during an Instagram reel. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Adding to the heartbreak, Hall revealed that Medas does not have medical insurance — and the mounting medical expenses have left his family scrambling. “His sweet, strong mother has created a GoFundMe to help with the overwhelming expenses,” Hall said.
She urged fans to send support however they can: “Please pray for Kirk. Pray for his mother. Pray for his friends. And pray for his castmates - we’re all hurting watching our brother fight this battle.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, necrotizing pancreatitis is a serious complication of acute pancreatitis where parts of the pancreas begin to die. The condition can lead to both short-term and long-term complications, and recovery can be long and difficult.
Medas’ journey to reality TV fame was as unexpected as it was endearing. In a 2017 interview with The Post, he explained how a friend's nerves ended up landing him in front of MTV cameras instead.
“My buddy called me and was like, ‘I’m getting interviewed for this TV show, I’m nervous and I need some comfort.’ So I went over to his house and they [the producers] ended up meeting me and they asked if they could interview me,” Medas said. “I ended up making the cut, but I felt bad because [my friend] didn’t.”
Alongside Hall, Prowant, Gus Smyrnios, Jeremiah Buoni, Candace Rice, Codi Butts, and Kortni Gilson, Medas brought laughs, loyalty, and plenty of unforgettable moments to Floribama Shore, MTV’s spiritual follow-up to Jersey Shore.
After his run on the series, Medas went on to make appearances in Fear Factor and Nick Cannon’s Wild ‘n Out.
Before his hospitalization, the 30-something had been open about turning over a new leaf, often sharing personal reflections on social media about his journey toward better physical and spiritual health.
“Lost a lot the past year but stayed resilient through it all,” Medas wrote in a March Instagram reel.
“Mind, body, spirit. Changing my lifestyle completely was the start. Putting down the bottle and picking up the Bible was the best thing I [had] ever done. My only regret is not making such changes earlier on in life.”
A GoFundMe page started for Medas has raised over $18,000 at the time of writing.
