The renowned fitness coach attracted legions of fans thanks to his exuberant personality, pioneering the Sweatin’ to the Oldies workout series during the 1970s and 1980s.

Establishing numerous gyms and producing dozens of fitness videos throughout his career, Simmons is hailed on his website as "one of the world’s most revered and iconic fitness personalities," boasting over four decades as an "instructor and motivator".

Described as blending a serious health message with his trademark humor, Simmons has no doubt helped an entire generation with their own fitness journeys thanks to his advice on balanced eating and lively exercise routines. In fact, his website biography credits him with aiding in the collective loss of over 3,000,000 pounds.

Raised in New Orleans, Simmons once battled his weight issues - tipping the scales at 268 pounds upon high school graduation. Taking charge of his health, he embraced moderate eating habits and exercise, setting the stage for his transformative journey.

Relocating to Los Angeles in 1973, Simmons encountered a fitness landscape that he felt excluded the overweight. In response, he founded SLIMMONS in Beverly Hills a year later, becoming a hub for fitness classes and seminars until 2013, according to his website.

Extending his influence beyond the gym, Simmons went on to host The Richard Simmons Show, a nationally syndicated series that garnered multiple Emmy awards.

Additionally, he authored nine books and three cookbooks, and his 65 fitness videos collectively sold over 20 million copies, solidifying his impact on fitness and wellness worldwide.
