Sinead O'Connor has revealed that she has said goodbye to her late teenage son in a "very lovely" Hindu ceremony.

The singer's 17-year-old son, Shane, went missing on January 5 while on suicide watch at an Irish hospital. Sadly, his body was found two days later on January 7.

Shane was the son of the 55-year-old 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer and 74-year-old musician Donal Lunny.

As reported by The Sun, Shane was laid to rest in a ceremony at Newlands Cross Cemetery and Crematorium in West Dublin, which was attended by around 50 mourners. Both of his parents were able to attend, with O’Connor wearing a bright pink tracksuit to the ceremony - which The Sun reports was "in line with her son's wishes".

Shane had reportedly planned his own funeral prior to his death.

Taking to Twitter following the funeral, O'Connor wrote: "We just said goodbye to our beautiful angel, Shaney.

"Very lovely Hindu ceremony. Shane will have loved it. He was always chanting 'Om. Shanti'."

She then added that she put a few packets of cigarettes in his casket, "in case there’s none in heaven".

According to the Times of India, "Om Shanti" is chanted as a method of invoking peace "and is very widely used in Hinduism and religions like Buddhism and Jainism."

The funeral comes after a grieving O'Connor told her concerned Twitter followers that she had been taken to hospital by police after tweeting distressing messages about "following" her son. The tweets have since been deleted.

Following the alarming tweets, she added: "I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I am with cops now on way to hospital. I’m sorry I upset everyone. I am lost without my kid and I hate myself. Hospital will help a while."

After the funeral, O'Connor tweeted that she had been listening to a mantra "for peace of departed soul and grief".

As expected, the singer has received an outpouring of support from other Twitter users.

Our thoughts go out to O'Connor, and the rest of Shane's family and friends at this time.
