Haley Joel Osment, the former child star best known for seeing dead people in The Sixth Sense, is making headlines again - but this time, it’s not for a movie role.

The 37-year-old actor was arrested earlier this month for public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance while at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in California, according to reports.

Law enforcement took Osment into custody on April 8 after receiving a call just before 2:00PM about a reportedly intoxicated individual on the resort’s property, New York Post reported.

Sources told People that the “controlled substance right now is presumed to be cocaine.”

“We sent it for testing. We will have the results soon,” a police insider told the outlet.

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Osment appeared unbothered in his mugshot—flashing a big smile for the camera. He was released shortly after being booked.

Whether Osment will be formally charged is now in the hands of the Mono County District Attorney's Office.

According to TMZ, Osment has been “going through it recently,” with a source revealing that he lost “everything” in the Altadena wildfire.

The outlet claimed he was battling his insurance provider after they denied his claim on a replacement home he had just secured.

This isn’t the actor’s first brush with the law.

In 2006, at the age of 18, Osment was involved in a car accident and charged with misdemeanor drunk driving and marijuana possession. He later pleaded no contest to both charges and was sentenced to three years of probation, per the Sun.

More recently, in 2018, authorities were called after he got into a verbal altercation at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday.

Osment first captured hearts—and scared audiences—at just 11 years old when he starred opposite Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense.

His performance earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, making him the second-youngest actor ever to receive that honor.

But his career actually began even earlier. At just four years old, he landed a role in a Pizza Hut commercial, which quickly snowballed into bigger gigs—including playing Forrest Gump’s son in the 1994 Oscar-winning film.

He would go on to appear in hits like Pay It Forward and Secondhand Lions, becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable child actors of the early 2000s.

As he transitioned out of childhood stardom, Osment made the conscious decision to step back from the spotlight. He enrolled at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, a move he later told The Guardian was essential for personal growth.

“I did work that practically nobody saw for a long time, which was not a great career move, but, ultimately, was important for me to figure out whether this was what I truly wanted to do for the rest of my life,” he said.

He added that he’s been “always building” on his early fame: “I’m lucky to have a positive relationship with those periods that can sometimes be difficult for other people.”

Outside of acting, Osment is all about sports and the outdoors. He previously told Celebrity Wheel of Fortune viewers that he enjoys golfing, attending Dodgers games, and snowboarding with friends—which makes his appearance at Mammoth Mountain more understandable, albeit with an unfortunate twist.

Haley Joel isn’t the only Osment with Hollywood ties. His younger sister, Emily Osment, rose to fame on the Disney Channel as Lilly Truscott in Hannah Montana alongside Miley Cyrus.

Emily has also enjoyed a successful music career under the alias Bluebiird, and returned to acting with a role in The Kominsky Method—where she starred alongside her brother—and Netflix's 2021 sitcom Pretty Smart.
