The Handmaid's Tale is coming back!
On Monday (June 13), Hulu not only announced the release date for the fifth season of the Emmy award-winning show, but also gave fans a first look at Elizabeth Moss as June Osborne.
Fans of the hit show may remember that the fourth season ended with June orchestrating the murder Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), as a group of former handmaids beat him to death in a forest (dare I say, one of the most satisfying character deaths in television history?).
The final moments of the season ended with Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) receiving her now-deceased husband's finger and wedding ring in an envelope, and Luke (O. T. Fagbenle) finding a blood-covered June cradling their baby girl and asking for "five more minutes", as he realizes what the horrors of Gilead has done to his wife.
And fans don't have to wait too long to find out what happens next, as Hulu announced that the show will be returning on September 14. (A Wednesday, for those of you who are wondering. Perfect 'hump day' viewing.)
Their social media posts also revealed two shots of June and Serena.
June looks as cold and accursed as you'd probably expect, but Serena can be seen smiling, despite looking like she's dressed for a funeral. I'm sure we can all figure out who she's "mourning".
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Fiennes will be back in season 5 through flashbacks.
But what else will viewers see in season five? Will June and Luke finally get Hannah back? What will happen after June's "five minutes" is up? Will Aunt Lydia and Serena finally get what's coming to them?
In a recent interview on The Drew Barrymore show, Moss spoke about the upcoming season, revealing: "I will say it’s a very big season, we’ve been on location a lot, we’ve been in the studio very little - which for us means that it’s very big, and we’re just constantly on the road, a lot of locations."
"June’s journey is very big, other character journeys are very big. And June is dealing with, what does freedom actually mean. Can she really be free, and what does that mean, and where do my place my anger - really big questions, but really identifiable."
Put it in your diaries! September 14!
