Valerie Mahaffey - the beloved Emmy-winning actress known for her work on shows like Northern Exposure, Desperate Housewives, and Young Sheldon - has died at the age of 71.

Her death, which occurred in Los Angeles on May 30, was confirmed by her publicist, Jillian Roscoe.
Mahaffey had been battling cancer, per The Hollywood Reporter.
“America Has Lost One of Its Most Endearing Actresses”
Mahaffey’s husband, fellow actor Joseph Kell, paid tribute in a moving statement: “I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed.”
The couple shares one daughter, Alice Richards.
Friends and colleagues described Mahaffey as “naturally kind-hearted” and a woman who “exuded a warm and infectious energy.”
Fans also shared heartfelt tributes across social media, praising her ability to bring memorable nuance to every role.
“No matter the episode count or number of lines she would have, Valerie Mahaffey made an impression,” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“She was always JUST right no matter what she was working in,” said another.
“When her name came up on the screen, my heart jumped with delight,” added a third.
“She was in EVERYTHING! And no one did soft spoken, passive aggressive viciousness better! So sad to hear she’s passed and only 71. RIP,” one fan wrote on X.
An Award-Winning Career on Screen and Stage
Born on June 16, 1953, in Indonesia, Mahaffey spent her early years there before moving to Nigeria, then England, and eventually the US. She graduated from the University of Texas in 1975 and quickly launched a successful acting career in New York City.
She appeared on Broadway six times between 1976 and 1984, with notable roles in Dracula opposite Raul Julia and Play Memory, directed by Harold Prince. She earned two Obie Awards for her Off-Broadway performances in Top Girls and Talking Heads.
On television, Mahaffey rose to prominence in the NBC soap opera The Doctors as Ashley Bennett from 1979–1981, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination. Her breakout role came with CBS’ Northern Exposure, where her portrayal of Eve, a quirky hypochondriac, won her a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 1992. She was the only cast member from the show to win an Emmy.

Mahaffey’s filmography includes memorable performances in Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), Seabiscuit (2003), Sully (2016), No Pay, Nudity (2016), and the dark comedy French Exit (2020), in which she starred opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges. Her role as Madame Reynard earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination. She also co-produced and starred in Summer Eleven (2010) with her daughter.
Her most recent screen appearances were in the Apple TV+ series Echo 3 and the 2025 film The 8th Day.
