A family of four has been killed after their teen daughter fell asleep at the wheel and drove off a cliff, police in Idaho have revealed.
Calvin Miller, 36, had taken his three children - 17-year-old Dakota, 10-year-old Jack, and eight-year-old Delilah - to see their grandfather in hospice care over the weekend.
However, the four never made it home after their vehicle plummeted 30 feet off a cliff and into the Salmon River in Riggins, a city in Idaho.
On Wednesday this week (June 14) it was confirmed by police that the devastating accident had likely been caused by Dakota falling asleep at the wheel after becoming fatigued from the family's 274-mile trip from Washington to Idaho, NBC News detailed.
According to the incident report: "Dakota drove off the highway, striking a large pile of rocks, sending the vehicle airborne. The vehicle struck another large pile of rocks, flipping the vehicle over end and landing upside down in the Salmon River."
Once found by local fishermen, the car was partially submerged - with police suggesting that the family may have drowned to death.
Miller's ex partner Zella Blair - who is also the mother of Delilah and Jack - was obviously devastated by the news, telling KREM2: "I don't know if I can get used to them not coming through the door after school and yelling for me again. They were huge. They were my whole life."
She revealed to the outlet that she had dropped off Delilah and Jack to spend the weekend with their father but had not been aware of the planned trip to Idaho. Amberlynn Weber, Miller's current partner, broke the news to Zella. "I feel really bad for Amber though because she did lose all four people of her household. Even though they weren't her blood kids, she was always really great to them."
Amberlynn's father Scott Henri also told KREM2 that he and his family were absolutely torn apart by the tragedy, having described Miller and his three children as welcomed additions to their family. "Calvin was a truly exceptional human being, and we're lucky to have had the time with him that we did. His kind heart and sensitive soul, not to mention his amazing sense of humor, brought a richness to our lives that can't be replaced."
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Millers, as well as the Blairs and Webers.
