The first trailer for the Matilda reboot has been released, giving audiences a glimpse into the new cast and characters.
Based on the 1988 novel by Roald Dahl, the upcoming Netflix film will be different from the beloved 1996 film. This upcoming version will be a musical and draw inspiration from the popular 2010 stage adaptation of the book, Matilda the Musical.
The stage musical has been operating on the West End since 2010 and upon success moved to Broadway from 2013 to 2017.
Matthew Warchus takes the helm as director of the upcoming adaptation, having previously directed the stage show. The show's musical numbers were also written by Australian writer and comedian, Tim Minchin.
The Netflix movie stars Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, Alisha Weir as Matilda, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Matilda’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood.

For those that don't know, Matilda tells the story of a neglected bookworm with telekinetic powers, who frequently uses the library as escapism from her parents.
After persuading her parents to let her go to school, Matilda learns to stand up to the bullies, including the cruel headmistress Miss Trunchbull, with the help of her favorite teacher, Miss Honey.
The original 1996 film received critical acclaim upon release, especially for the performance of stars Danny DeVito and Mara Wilson. DeVito played Matilda's car salesman dad, Harry, while Matilda's mom was played by DeVito's real-life wife, Rhea Perlman.
Miss Trunchball was played by the legendary Pam Ferris and Miss Honey was portrayed by Embeth Davidtz.
Matilda is one of the first of Netflix's new adaptations of the Roald Dahl classics to make it to the screen.
Wonka, a prequel movie starring Timothee Chalamet as the bizarre chocolate factory founder, is expected to be released in December 2023.
The musical will be released across the UK and Ireland exclusively in movie theaters on December 2, 2022. Netflix will then release the film globally this Christmas.
