A lone gunman killed four people and injured three in a Denver area shooting on Monday.
The suspect was eventually shot down by police. He died at the scene.
Investigators have yet to determine a motive for the attack, which unfolded at several locations.
Reuters reports that the shooting began around 5:00PM when the gunman opened fire near downtown Denver. As well as killing two women, his shots here also injured a man.
From downtown Denver, the attacker escaped in a car to the Cheesman Park neighborhood, where he fatally shot a third person.
Police Chief Paul Pazen described in a news briefing how police had pursued the suspect, twice exchanging gunfire with him from his vehicle. The gunman disabled a police cruiser before driving on to the neighboring city of Lakewood.
Lakewood Police spokesman John Romero reported that the gunman then shot and killed a fourth victim inside an unspecified shop.
Following this attack, the gunman was pursued by Lakewood police who tried to pull him over. After engaging in a running gun battle with officers, the suspect fled on foot took cover in a Hyatt Place hotel.
Inside the hotel, the suspect shot and wounded a clerk before he was eventually cornered by police. They exchanged further gunfire, during which an officer was wounded and the suspect was shot dead.
However, Lakewood police cannot be certain whether it was their own gunshots that killed him. Romero told the Denver Post they were "still unsure exactly if it was by Lakewood police or not but he was then pronounced dead at the scene."
Authorities have yet to publicly identify the suspect or the circumstances leading to the attack, and the incident remains under investigation.
Pazen said his officers had worked to "stop this suspect from this killing spree," as fast as they could, NBC reports.
He added: "This is the holiday season. To have this type of spree take place is not normal for our community. We cannot lose sight of the victims in this, the people that are still fighting for their lives, including a Lakewood agent."
