Joe Biden has formally announced that he will be running for a second term as president, with elections set to take place in 2024.
The 80-year-old is currently the oldest president in US history, and if successfully re-elected he will be 86 at the end of a second full term in 2029, per BBC News.
Biden was elected in 2020 as he went head-to-head with Donald Trump, whose loss was contested by his supporters and resulted in the Capitol building being stormed.
In a statement, President Biden said: "Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours. That’s why I’m running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let’s finish the job."
The announcement comes after weeks of speculation, though it never seemed in doubt that the 80-year-old would stand for a second term.
It hasn't been a question of whether Biden would announce his intention to stand again, but a question of when, and he opted to make the announcement on the fourth anniversary of his 2020 announcement.
A video was paired with the official statement, in which the president can be seen meeting a diverse range of people while stating: "When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America - and we still are."

It would appear that the 2024 election is set to be a rematch of what occurred in 2020, as Trump has already announced his candidacy for the Republican party. Both men are considered to be favorites to win their nominations.
Despite having no clear competitor from the Democrats, an NBC poll showed that 70% of those questioned believed that he should not stand for office again.
It would appear that the concern comes due to his age, with 48% of people stating that this was a "major concern" for them.
The president isn't unaware of the questions raised about his age, as earlier this year he stated: "It's legitimate for people to raise issues about my age. And the only thing I can say is, watch me."

BBC News reports that 36% of Americans approve of his time in office - this is 3% more than Trump's approval rating in December 2017.
