It's official - Ruth Carter just became the first Black woman to win two Academy Awards.

The 62-year-old has made history tonight after winning her second award for her costume work on the Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Back in 2019, the designer won an Oscar for Marvel's first installment of the movie, which starred the late Chadwick Boseman. At the time, the prize earned her the status of the first-ever Black woman to take home a statuette for costume design.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Carter joins a small but elite club of other Black actors who have won two competitive Oscars including the likes of Denzel Washington, Willie D. Burton, Russell Williams II, and Mahershala Ali.

During her speech, Carter addressed a crowd of other notable faces in the entertainment industry, telling the crowd that she was thankful that the Academy recognized "the superhero that is a Black woman."

"Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman," she said. "She endures. She loves. She overcomes. She is every woman in this film."

She continued: "She is my mother. This past week Mabel Carter became an ancestor. This film prepared me for this moment. Chadwick, please take care of mom.

"Ryan Coogler, Nate Moore, thank you both for your vision. Together, we are reshaping how culture is represented. The Marvel family, Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Louis D’Esposito and their arsenal of genius, thank you. I share this with many dedicated artists whose hands and hearts helped manifest the costumes of Wakanda and Talokan.

"This is for my mother. She was 101," the designer added.

Elsewhere during the show, we saw some other incredible actors and actresses make history too.

Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian winner of the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Accepting her statuette, Yeoh told a cheering audience: "For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.

"And ladies don't let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime."

She also dedicated the award to her mother and "all the moms in the world because they are really the superheros and without them none of us would be here tonight."

Similarly, Ke Huy Quan also thanked his mother as he accepted his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the same sci-fi comedy.

"My mom is 84 years old and she is at home watching," he told the audience. "Ma, I just won an Oscar!"

Quan told how his story "started on a boat" and after spending a year in a refugee camp, "somehow I ended up here on Hollywood's biggest stage".

He continued: "They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe this is happening to me - this is the American dream."
