Wellwishers have raised over $400,000 to fund medical costs for a man who was severely injured after his wedding reception, with proceeds also funding his wife's funeral.

A bride and groom saw their wedding day turn to tragedy, with reports stating that they were struck by an alleged drunk driver just moments after leaving their wedding reception.

As reported by WYFF 4, Samantha "Sam" Hutchinson, 34, and her new husband Aric Hutchinson were photographed leaving their reception after tying the knot on April 28.

The couple got onto a golf buggy at 10:00 PM that was due to take them from their wedding venue, when they were rear-ended by 25-year-old Jamie Lee Komoroski, who was allegedly intoxicated behind the wheel.

The 25-year-old was arrested and charged with DUI involving death and reckless homicide.

Sam tragically died as a result of the injuries she sustained, while Aric remains in hospital suffering from numerous broken bones, and a brain injury, and has undergone one of two reconstruction surgeries.

Police claim that the driver was traveling at 65 mph (104 km/h) in a 25 mph (40 km/h) zone, and the golf cart rolled several times and was thrown over 100 yards.

A GoFundMe page has since been set up by Annette Hutchinson, Aric's mother, in order to cover medical bills as well as Sam's funeral.

Heartbreakingly, Annette wrote: "I was handed Aric’s wedding ring in a plastic bag at the hospital, five hours after Sam placed it on his finger and they read each other their vows. Aric has lost the love of his life."

Since the creation of the page, it has raised over $400,000 from well-wishers who have flocked to offer their condolences to the families.

In the comments on the fundraising page, one person penned: "There are no words for this, I'm so very sorry for your loss and sending love and best wishes to all involved."

A second added: "Condolences for your loss, and prayers for the recovery of your loved ones. This horrific story breaks my heart. Condolences from Canada."

The story has touched people all around the world as donations have flocked in from places such as the UK and Germany.

Annette added further details on the couple: "The couple made their home in both the groom's home state of Utah and the state of South Carolina. The bride is from North Carolina.

"The groom graduated from Bonneville High School in South Ogden, Utah, and played college football for Snow College and Utah Tech."

The initial target of the page was to raise $100,000 but this target has since been exceeded as over 10,800 people have offered up some money.

Annette explained that her son-in-law Benjamin Garrett and grandson Brogan Garrett were also in the golf cart at the time of the incident and that Ben is also seriously injured.

Our thoughts remain with the loved ones of those involved in the incident.
