‘President Zelensky Way’ road sign erected outside Russian embassy in Washington DC
A road sign paying tribute to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appeared outside the Russian embassy in Washington DC.
The sign - which reads 'President Zelensky Way' - honors the popular leader who has defiantly opposed Russian invaders over the past few weeks.
According to HuffPost, the provocative street market was erected by the political action committee Mad Dog PAC. In an interview with the outlet, group chair Claude Taylor described it as "a symbolic gesture on our part."
He went on to say that the man responsible for the sign was Mad Dog's long-time billboard designer and Ukrainian national called Sean. According to Taylor, the designer and his family are having to hide intermittently in bomb shelters in Dnipro, Ukraine.
Taylor described working with his colleague, saying: "You know, sirens are going off in the background and he’s like, 'Wait a minute. I’ll be right back. Gotta go to the shelter'".
Since Russian troops invaded Ukraine last month, over 1.5 million people have had to flee to neighboring countries and hundreds of civilians have been killed, per the UN.
Protestors in Washington D.C. have been gathering outside the Russian embassy to call for an end to the war, writing messages on the sidewalk and waving Ukrainian flags.
Zelensky has been widely praised for his defiant fight against invading troops. In a speech on Sunday night, he condemned the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his military, saying: "How many families like this have died in Ukraine?" according to a translation by The Independent.
"We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will punish everyone who committed atrocities in this war. On our land. There will be no quiet place on this earth for you, except for the grave," he continued.
"It seems everything Russian servicemen have already done is still not enough for them. Not enough ruined destinies. Mutilated lives. They want to kill even more," the president added.
