A major picture agency has revealed that a picture of the late Queen Elizabeth II with her great-grandchildren had been edited.

The latest royal family photograph facing backlash was shared by Buckingham Palace in April 2023 on what would have been the late monarch's 97th birthday.

The image - which was reportedly shot by Princess Catherine in August 2022 inside Balmoral Castle - shows the late Queen seated next to Prince William and Catherine's children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, James, Earl of Wessex, Lena Tindall, Isla Phillips, Mia Tindall, Lucas Tindall, and Savannah Phillips are also spotted in the photo, sitting around the late monarch on a green sofa.

This is the second image recently confirmed to have been digitally manipulated by the Royal Family after a photograph of the 41-year-old princess and her three children released for Mother's Day sparked uproar on social media.

On March 10, the Palace released its first official photograph of Princess Catherine since she underwent abdominal surgery in January. It was captioned: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day."

The post revealed that the image was taken by Prince William, with the date being simply "2024".

The public began to spot some problems with the image, suspecting that it had been altered. The controversy was further fuelled when several international picture agencies refused to circulate the photograph, with the Associated Press going as far as to say it had been "manipulated by the source".

A statement was then shared on the Prince and Princess of Wales's official Twitter account addressing the claims the photo had been reworked, with Catherine herself stating that she edited the original image.

The tweet read: "Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C."

It seems like the royal family saga may come to an end soon as newly released photos and videos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at a farm shop were released this week, seemingly putting an end to the speculation surrounding Kate Middleton's whereabouts after she was not seen since undergoing abdominal surgery in January.
