It's official: Velma is a lesbian.

Fans of the Mystery Inc. gang have been speculating for decades over the sexuality of the beloved bespectacled character.

Now, a clip from the brand new movie Trick or Treat Scooby-Do! appears to have finally confirmed what viewers have always suspected - that Velma is more into girls than she is into guys.

The scene - which has already gone viral on social media - shows Velma getting flushed and flustered when she runs into glamorous costume designer Coco Diablo.

Unsurprisingly, the clip has caused quite a stir on Twitter. Many people have taken to the platform to celebrate Velma's confirmed sexuality.

"OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY CANON CANON IN THE MOVIES LETS GOOOOOO," one fan tweeted.

Another wrote: "GAY VELMA REAL OMFG??????"

"Velma getting her lesbian debut after five decades thank u," a third added.

While some people were surprised by the news of Velma's sexuality, the fact that the orange-sweater-wearing detective is a lesbian has been an open secret among fans of the show for decades.

Per Variety, James Gunn (who wrote the early live-action films) and Tony Cervone (supervising producer on the Mystery Inc. series) confirmed that Velma is gay years ago. However, they were never able to make her sexuality explicit on screen.

In 2020, Gunn reportedly tweeted that he "tried" to make Velma gay in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies.

"In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script," he wrote, adding: "But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)."

Meanwhile, Cervone took to Instagram in the same year to make it clear that his vision for Velma was as a gay character.

"I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represents this one. We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago. Most of our fans got it. To those that didn’t, I suggest you look closer. There’s no new news here," the producer wrote.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! is available to rent or purchase on Prime Video.
