A British primary school teacher has been praised for walking around five miles every day to ensure that disadvantaged students continue to be fed properly every day during the coronavirus crisis.

Zane Powles, an assistant headteacher at Grimsby-based Western Primary School and ex-soldier, has been hand-delivering 78 packed lunches to the local community since the school was forced to close as a result of the outbreak.

The meals, which each contain a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a biscuit and an apple, are being distributed to children who would ordinarily qualify for free school meals and have provided real relief to struggling parents.

Speaking to Sky News, Powles was extremely modest about his continued commitment to his students, commenting that, ''My job is the welfare of children and educating them. In these times I'm just doing it in a different way.''

He also added that delivering the meals himself helps to ''encourage parents to stay in their homes with their children, and keeps everyone safe.''

Unsurprisingly, Powles has been heralded as a hero by the community for his selfless actions. Several students have created posters, murals and messages of support, with one reading "Well done Mr Powles" and another inscribed on a garden wall in 18-inch high capital letters.

Many parents have also been particularly effusive, with one telling Sky News:

''It helps a lot because it means we don't have to go out to the shops all the time to get food in for the kids, so we can keep our families safer.''

The coronavirus continues to cause chaos around the world, with over 1.6 million cases and 96,000 deaths, as per the WHO. In uncertain times, small actions like this can help make a massive difference.
