Two suspects who were arrested in connection with the shooting that took place during the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade are juveniles, the police have reported.
The incident unfolded at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, shortly after 3:30 PM on Wednesday (February 14), according to reports by Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves.
Three gunmen unleashed a hail of gunfire, turning a day of celebration into a scene of chaos and tragedy.
Despite the presence of over 800 police officers, the assailants managed to inflict devastating harm. One person lost their life, while 22 others sustained injuries, leaving the community reeling and searching for answers.
"It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs' rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family," the radio station shared on Facebook, mourning the loss of a cherished member of their team and the Kansas City community.
Amid the tragedy, hope emerged as Children's Mercy Kansas City reported that although 11 children were among the injured, all are expected to recover from their wounds, offering a glimmer of solace to a shaken community.
As reported by Sky News, two of the three suspects who have been arrested are juveniles. They are now being questioned about their alleged involvement.
Travis Kelce, a star player for the Chiefs, shared his sorrow in a heartfelt post, saying, "I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected."
The Kansas City Chiefs organization also released a statement, condemning the "senseless act of violence" and extending condolences to the victims and their families. Assuring the safety of their players, staff, and families, they expressed gratitude to law enforcement and first responders for their swift action.
Amongst those at the parade was Patrick Mahomes' brother Jackson, who has been praised after he was spotted looking after a child who had been separated from its mother.
The witness, named Jess, took to X, and has since been cited by TMZ stating: "I don’t care what anyone says but I have found a new found respect for Jackson Mahomes, Ana and I were stuck hiding with him at union station by the trains and he was taking care of a child who lost his parents and helping him calm down."
She added about the incident: "We heard pops and then we saw everyone rushing running crying headed towards where I was standing in panic and we had to jump over the gates by the stage and entrance of union station running for our lives in union station hearing gunshots seeing people HIDING IN OVENS!"
