An American TikTok star has revealed the ‘biggest lie’ that British people tell, and - if you know the UK - it might not surprise you.
The UK and the USA have a longstanding rivalry that stretches back hundreds of years, and while wars have been fought in the past, it’s mostly friendly nowadays.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t still a few culture clashes to be had, as you’re about to find out.
Kelani is a TikTok star who loves the UK
Kelani - or @kelanighosthunter to his millions of online fans - is something of a Brit at heart
Despite being from the United States, he has fallen in love with British culture and has spent quite a bit of time reviewing the food and culture of England, Scotland, and Wales along the way.
It turns out that he still has a bit to learn though, as a recent trip to Manchester taught him.
Manchester gave the world acid house, Oasis, and - well - a whole load of things, and it continues to be a great place for an evening out dancing.
However, it’s. The terminology that caught Kelani here.
There’s a ‘quiet night’ and ‘out out’
If you’re a British person reading this, you’ll already know what we’re talking about, as Kelani captioned his post: “This is the BIGGEST lie Brits will tell.”
He then explained: “If a Brit says this to you, they are absolutely lying.
“The phrase I’m referring to is ‘a quiet night out’.
“A quiet night out is the biggest lie you could ever be told.”
Turning to his own situation, he continued: “Me and Savannah had dinner with a new friend last night and we just said ‘maybe one cheeky pint, a quiet one, quiet night out…”
“Well, let’s just say that your boy ended up at [local pizza and booze joint] Crazy Pedro’s at about three o’clock in the morning, and we need carbs - we need carbs, bad.
“Let me just tell you though, if a Brit says ‘quiet night out’ it is never a quiet night out.
“It really isn’t, they say that, they get you to go, they convince you to go, and then you’re stuck.
“For some reason, they’ve got this way they can kind of just snake charm you, and all of a sudden - BAM - you’re out until four in the morning in the middle of Manchester, ON A TUESDAY.”
Is there ever such a thing as a ‘quiet night out’ or not?
He later posed the question: “If you are a Brit, is it ever just a quiet night out?”
In the comments, the Brits were happy to explain the sliding scale.
One person explained: “I think the official scale is - 1. A cheeky half (3 pints) 2. A couple (5-6 pints) 3. Going out (7+ pints + shots 4. Going Out Out (anything goes - cancel everything for the next 2 days)…”
Another simply admitted: “I start out with good intentions…”
A third added: “Quiet night out = best random night out ever!
“Talked about for years.”
Someone else then admitted: “Damn he's the only American I know who's finally figured us out.”
There you have it, folks - learn the difference between a ‘quiet night out’ and ‘out out’.
