Police have confirmed that the human remains found amid the search for the missing Sarah Everard are those of the missing 33-year-old.

Per BBC News, the announcement was made by Assistant Commissioner Nick Ephgrave, who confirmed that the remains found in woodland near Ashford, Kent, are those of Everard.

Speaking outside New Scotland Yard, Ephgrave said: "As you know, on Wednesday evening detectives investigating the disappearance of Sarah Everard discovered a body secreted in woodland in Kent.

"The body has now been recovered and formal identification procedure has now been undertaken."

Ephgrave added that Ms Everard's family had been informed and were being supported.

Everard, 33, went missing on March 3 after walking home to Brixton, south London, from her friend's home in Clapham. She was last seen walking alone down a main road in Clapham at 21:30 GMT.

Ephgrave added: "Specialist officers remain in constant contact with Sarah's family, and will continue to support them throughout the investigation and beyond.

"That investigation continues at a pace and we have hundreds of officers working round the clock to establish the full circumstances of Sarah's disappearance, and her murder."

A week after she vanished, London police confirmed that a police officer in the capital had been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and murder, prior to human remains being discovered in a woodland in Kent, south of London.

The man, in his 40s, reportedly works with the Metropolitan police's Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command.

On Thursday, the man was taken to hospital after suffering head injuries sustained while alone in his cell.

After being treated and released, he is once again being held in custody per the request of the Wimbledon Magistrates' Court.

Additionally, a woman in her 30s has also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has been released on bail until April.

Sarah's disappearance has sparked a stream of conversation both on and off social media regarding the safety of women.
