Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have received an award for only having two children.

In an official statement made by the environmentalist group Population Matters, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were praised in honor of World Population Day 2021, on Sunday, 11 July.

A spokesperson for Population Matters wrote that they were giving the couple a prize for their "brave work promoting reproductive rights, defending the environment, and enlightening the public about the challenges we face."

They continued:

"Having a smaller family reduces our impact on the Earth, and provides a better chance for all our children, their children and future generations to flourish on a healthy planet.

"We commend the Duke and Duchess for taking this enlightened decision, and for affirming that a smaller family is also a happy family."

The spokesperson added that the couple will be gifted over $500, which they can then give to the charity of their choice.

Sky News reports that other recipients of the award include Wendo Aszed, founder of a women's empowerment and community health project in rural Kenya, novelist Emma Gannon, and Nairashe Maritsa; a Zimbabwean teen activist.

Meghan and Harry are proud parents to two-year-old Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, born in 2019, and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, born earlier this year.

Harry previously revealed his intention to only raise a maximum of two children while speaking in an interview with noted primate expert Jane Goodall for Vogue back in 2019.

The Duke stated: "I think, weirdly, because of the people that I’ve met and the places that I've been fortunate enough to go to, I've always had a connection and a love for nature.

"I view it differently now, without question. I've always wanted to try and ensure that, even before having a child and hoping to have children."

He added: "But I’ve always thought: [the Earth] is borrowed. And, surely, being as intelligent as we all are, or as evolved as we all are supposed to be, we should be able to leave something better behind for the next generation."
