Princes William and Harry were reunited in grief at Windsor Castle yesterday, as they viewed floral tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.
The Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen shaking hands and speaking with members of the public, just one day after King Charles III addressed the nation.
Many of the high-profile members of the Royal Family were seen visiting memorials to the late Queen across the UK. It was the first time the four royals were seen out in public since the death of Britain's longest-reigning monarch on September 8.
Wearing black, the unexpected appearance from both brothers' show of unity in mourning was greeted with applause and cheers by onlookers, who had visited the site to pay their respects to their grandmother.
According to the Independent, a royal source said that the 40-year-old Prince of Wales invited his younger brother to join him for their first public appearance together since the unveiling of a statue of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales in July 2021.
They both attended a service of thanksgiving for the Queen’s platinum jubilee earlier this year but insiders said that they did not speak.
The reunion comes after relations reportedly deteriorated in the wake of Prince Harry, 37, and Markle, 41, bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, and their announcement that they would step down from their senior royal duties in January 2020.
Their walkabout also came as Prince William issued a heartfelt tribute to the woman he knew as "grannie", praising her as an "extraordinary" leader for the country and a source of wisdom and reassurance for her family.
"I knew this day would come, but it will be sometime before the reality of life without Grannie will truly be real," he said. "I will honor her memory by supporting my father, the King, in every way I can."
Following Her Majesty's death, her coffin will leave Balmoral on Sunday (September 11) for the first leg of its journey towards the state funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September by traveling to Edinburgh, where it will lie in St Giles’ Cathedral.
King Charles III has ordered the day of his mother's funeral to be a Bank Holiday across the whole United Kingdom, to allow millions of British citizens to participate in the final farewell to the monarch who reigned for over seven decades.
After being formally proclaimed King in an accession ceremony at St James’s Palace in London on Saturday, September 10, he paid tribute to his mother’s reign for "its duration, its dedication, and its devotion" and promised to follow her example.
Also, in an address to the nation hours after the late Queen’s death, King Charles confirmed William as the new Prince of Wales and also sent a message of "love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas".
The King's comment was seen as an attempt to heal the tension which has expanded since the Sussexes' "Megxit" move to California and their decision to speak out about life inside the royal family.
