On Tuesday (July 16), a spokesperson for the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands confirmed to Sky News and BBC News that the body found in Tenerife amid the search for a missing UK teenager is that of Jay Slater.

The court official revealed that, during a post-mortem, the body's fingerprints were examined and confirmed to be those of 19-year-old Jay.

Intrigue still remains regarding the case, as the teenager had strayed from the road and was found in a remote ravine.

As previously reported, Mark Williams-Thomas - a UK detective who flew to Tenerife to aid with search - was investigating claims that Jay had stolen an expensive Rolex watch prior to his untimely death.

According to The Sun, Williams-Thomas referred to reports of a fight at the Papagayo Beach Club, the venue for the NRG event, where a European man complained about his watch being stolen.

Williams-Thomas alleges that Jay shared a Snapchat indicating he had taken a Rolex watch worth £12,000.

"Friends of Jay said he would not make this up and the watch was subject of later conversation between the friends," Williams-Thomas said in a video update shared to X.

Following the discovery of Jay's body, Spanish authorities were questioned about potential foul play, as per the Daily Star.

When asked about the Rolex and the specific location where Jay was found, the Civil Guard in Tenerife declined to comment specifically on the matter, saying: "All the information we're prepared to release at this stage has been put in the public domain.

"Any updates, should we decide to publish any more information, will be made available through the normal channels."

Spanish police have not disclosed whether they are investigating the alleged theft of the watch.

As reported by the Metro, floral tributes have been placed near the ravine where Jay was located, with heartfelt messages from his mother Debbie Duncan, his father Walter Slater, and his brother Zak.

“To my beautiful boy. I’m so sorry we never found you. I miss you so much. You will be forever young and forever missed. Love you so much, Mum,” wrote Debbie.

Walter's note read: “To my Boy, Love Dad, Always, XXXX.”

Zak, who spent weeks searching for Jay in Tenerife, left a note addressed to his "little bro," saying: "never in a million years did I think I’d be doing this."

He added: “I’ll look after mum and dad. Hope you’re partying up there with granddad. Hope to see you again some day. Rest easy bro, I love you, Zak XX.”

Plans are being made to repatriate Jay’s body to the UK, where a second post-mortem is expected to be conducted by a Home Office pathologist.
