What ‘1a’ means in William Chapman’s cause of death after he was killed in tiger attack
An inquest has revealed even more about the cause of death of William Chapman, after he was attacked by a tiger when entering the tiger enclosure at a wildlife park in the UK.
The incident occurred at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park last weekend, on October 10, and resulted in Chapman being pronounced dead at the scene.
In the days following the confirmation of his identity and death, Chapman’s mental health status was confirmed by an inquest to have been a significant part of his life in the run-up to the incident.
The former child actor’s initial cause of death was revealed by coroner officer Caitlin Brookes during an inquest into his death.
She said: “He was approached by the tiger and the ensuing physical contact between the tiger and Mr Chapman led to him sustaining multiple traumatic injuries which rapidly led to his death.”
A postmortem provisionally listed his death as being caused by ‘1A multiple traumatic injuries and 1B animal interaction.’
According to the Mirror, the ‘1a’ element describes the immediate cause of death, while ‘1b’ pertains to the underlying cause of 1a.
For Chapman, his primary cause of death is provisionally the wounds sustained, and his interactions with the tiger come secondary in the list of priorities.
More details from the post-mortem should be revealed during the full inquest in March 2027, as Senior Coroner for South Yorkshire East Nicola Mundy said the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust had launched an investigation into his death.
At the time of his passing, Chapman was said to be under the Trust’s care.
The inquest heard an officer say: "During my communications with Mr Chapman's family they confirmed he had a history of mental illness, a diagnosis of schizophrenia and had suffered previous bouts of psychosis and was under the care of Doncaster Mental Health Services.
"Despite his diagnosis Mr Chapman was highly functioning and independent.
"His family have expressed a number of concerns in relation to his contact with mental health services leading up to his death.”
Ultimately, the death of Chapman has been a shocking one for many, and particularly to those around him.
Chapman’s family paid tribute to him in a statement to the UK breakfast morning news show Good Morning Britain, which reads: "The publication and circulation of deeply offensive media content is causing them severe distress at an exceptionally vulnerable time.
"The family are utterly devastated by their loss and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened. [Chapman's] family are hopeful that the relevant authorities will do their utmost to get to the bottom of why our amazing son did what he did."
The statement concludes: "William was a bright, warm, and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved - and William loved them back."
