16-year-old dies after being impaled on a spike in freak accident in gym class

A teenager has tragically died after he was impaled on a goalpost during his high school gym class.

Brayden Bahme, 16, passed away on Thursday (April 27) after the horrific incident occurred at Cheney High School in Washington, US, as reported by The Mirror.

School officials disclosed that Brayden was running during the class when he fell over and somehow pierced his eye on a section of the post.

Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes and transported the young boy to a children's hospital where he unfortunately died from the injuries he sustained.

Cheney High School staff sent a message to the school community after the tragic loss.

The statement read: "While it is important to allow all the opportunity to experience grief, it is also important to maintain as normal a routine as possible regarding school activities.

"There may be a variety of reactions to the unforeseen loss of Brayden and reactions to loss do not have a timeline," the school added.

Brayden's family has launched a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise money for funeral costs. As of the time of writing $25,711 has been raised from the initial $10,000 goal.

A loved one named Holly Lytle organized the fundraiser and wrote: "It is with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to Brayden. Our entire family appreciates the outreach of support.

"This go-fund-me will be used to take care of Brayden’s final burial arrangements and the immediate needs of the family. All remaining funds will be used for a youth fishing program in honor of Brayden 'fish pockets' Bahme," she added.

Tributes have flooded in for the teen, with a former teacher of his writing: "Brayden was my youngest son's classmate. I can’t even begin to imagine your loss. Sending our most sincere condolences. May you find comfort in knowing how loved he was by our community."

Someone teacher from the school penned: "Brayden was one of my 7th-grade students. I will always remember him as sweet and kind, and can picture his smile when I think of him. My thoughts and prayers to all his family. May your memories bring you some peace through this tremendous loss."

Brayden's aunt Holly also shared an emotional post on Facebook, writing that "heaven gained an angel".

"My nephew Brayden Bahme passed away from an injury that he sustained at school. As you can imagine this is a tragic loss and his parents and siblings appreciate your grace in giving them time and space as they mourn," she heartbreakingly wrote.

"They asked that instead of spreading sadness and anger, we share love and our favorite memories of Bray - like this recent picture of him meeting his niece for the very first time," she concluded, adding a sweet picture of the teen with a newborn.
