Two people have been killed and five injured after at least two shooters opened fire on a party bus celebrating a woman's 21st birthday, the East Bay Times reports.
Officials said the tragic killing occurred on a San Francisco Bay Area freeway just after midnight on Tuesday, according to the outlet.
The gunmen targeted the bus at approximately 12:20 AM on Interstate 580 as it made its way back to Oakland from San Francisco.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) said in a press release: "Upon arrival, it was determined two separate shootings occurred. The initial shooting occurred on eastbound I-580 at the Seminary Avenue off-ramp. The second shooting occurred shortly after near Foothill Boulevard at 68th Avenue."
It went on: "A large passenger bus sustained multiple bullet strikes. Multiple victims sustained gunshot wounds with varying degrees of injuries. Two victims succumbed to their injuries."
The birthday girl was one of the five people injured in the shooting. The press release also suggests it was not a "random attack".
Following the incident, the East Bay Times reports that the driver managed to pull into an Oakland Police Eastmont Substation nearby.
Sadly, one person died on the bus and another victim succumbed to their injuries at an Oakland hospital. The five women who survived their injuries were also rushed to the hospital to receive treatment.
Those who were shot during the harrowing incident were all young women and teenage girls.
A relative told the East Bay Times that one of the women killed was 19-year-old Alayasia Thurston. They revealed that the teen had a daughter who is about to turn three.
The relative said: "It’s hard to wrap your head around something so crazy. She never made it off the bus."
The father of the birthday girl said his daughter was shot in the leg, but, fortunately, remains in a stable condition. The 21-year-old's sister and cousin were also in the vehicle.
CHP is carrying out an ongoing investigation into the attack with the Oakland Police Department. Those who have any information with regards to the incident are urged to contact CHP at (707) 917-4491.
