On the evening of Thursday December 27, an explosion at a Queens power plant turned the New York City skyline bright blue for a few moments, a result of the electrical fire. Startled and frightened onlookers took pictures and videos of the blaze, which reminded some people of July 4th celebrations, and the ethereal lights have since been viewed by millions of people on social media.

Shortly after the blast, the New York Police Department informed residents in the area that the eerie blue lights had occurred as a result of a transformer explosion at a Con Edison power plant. Nobody was hurt as a result of the fire, although the explosion did affect local subway services and cause power outages at LaGuardia Airport. Power was restored approximately half an hour later and all flights resumed.

We can be thankful that the explosion did not result in a tragedy, however, the footage that emerged in the aftermath of the explosion is well worth a look. Scroll down to check out some of the most amazing tweets about the incident.
