New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been in the news this week, but it isn't about anything politics-related.
The potential Presidential candidate recently caught the attention of the public after announcing her decision to freeze her eggs.
Ocasio-Cortez, 36, also addressed speculation that the choice could be connected to a possible 2028 presidential campaign.
The politician has been sharing progress of the process with followers on Instagram, sharing all about the hormone injections she needs to take before the eggs are collected.
But on Wednesday, reports emerged claiming that she had quietly split up from her fiancé Riley Roberts, as per The Independent.
In fact, it's claimed that the couple ended their engagement about 18 months ago, with the Congresswoman no longer wearing her engagement ring.
After opening up about her egg freezing process, she urged fans not to be "weird" about anything, as she explained how she saved money for it over time.
Ocasio-Cortez explained that it was the right moment for the procedure, given that Congress is on its August recess, adding: “This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” she said, adding that she felt “empowered” by the decision.
She can be seen injecting hormones into her abdomen in videos posted to her Instagram page, with one clip in particular going viral.
In the three-second clip, the Democrat gets closer to the camera and jokingly warns viewers, while winding up a punch: "Don't be weird," before bursting into laughter.
If you haven't guessed already, social media already made it weird, especially since news of her single status emerged this month.
Social media users took to X, reposting the viral clip of the Congresswoman, who has previously jokingly asked fans not to be weird.
One candidly wrote: "Putting politics aside, I think we can all agree that AOC is hot."
A more respectful user penned: "Resisting urge to not be weird about this (sorry AOC)," with a GIF of The Office character Michael Scott cringing.
"Something tells me she wants you to be a little weird," a third claimed.
Others jumped to Ocasio-Cortez's defence, with one pointing out: "She explicitly said don’t be weird. And here y’all are. Being weird."
Another video of the politician also did the rounds, where she is filming a vlog with her front camera as she prepares to go for a workout, dressed in gym clothes.
One account described her as the "Sydney Sweeney of politics," and it doesn't take a genius to figure out why they suggested that - whether it's fully appropriate or not is another conversation.
Fittingly, Ocasio-Cortez previously claimed that there is a different standard applied to women in US politics compared with men, explaining: “This is just not something that men deal with,
“Men run for office, or frankly, they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy is running for office. How old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?’” she said.
She said in an Instagram video that she was sworn into the House of Representatives at 29, explaining: “There’s this flip side where you have to then grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately.”
Ocasio-Cortez also addressed rumors linking her freezing her eggs to a potential presidential campaign, saying: “The media will run up and ask a question like, ‘Are you going to run for this? Or are you going to run for that?’
"And it is almost through this very two-dimensional, craven understanding or ambitious understanding of power."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has opened up about her decision to freeze her eggs, while addressing the speculation that the personal choice could be connected to a possible 2028 presidential campaign.
The 36-year-old New York Democrat revealed that she had begun the process and has been documenting parts of it for her followers on Instagram, including giving updates about the hormone injections required before the eggs can be collected.
Ocasio-Cortez said egg freezing was something she had been considering and saving money for over a period of time.
With Congress currently on its August recess, she said she felt that now was the right moment to undergo the procedure.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” she said, adding that she felt “empowered” by the decision.
The congresswoman also appeared to address assumptions that freezing her eggs could be linked to ambitions of becoming president in 2028.
“The media will run up and ask a question like, ‘Are you going to run for this? Or are you going to run for that?’ And it is almost through this very two-dimensional, craven understanding or ambitious understanding of power,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She argued that politicians, like many people, make major decisions based on a range of personal circumstances rather than simply their ambitions for political power.
“I think a lot of us actually approach these considerations or these decisions through the larger context of our lives as whole human beings and what is happening in our lives, as whole human beings,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that being so open about a deeply personal decision could potentially have political consequences.
However, she said she wanted to use her experience to provide information to other women and make conversations about fertility more commonplace.
The congresswoman even planned to continue her treatment while carrying out her political duties.
She said she was scheduled to appear on ABC News' This Week and intended to administer her hormone injections in the programme's waiting room before going on air.
“I want you all to see that. And because women can do anything, and I think it’s badass that I’m going to be giving myself shots in the green room [as I] get my glam on,” she said.
Egg freezing involves stimulating the ovaries with hormones before doctors retrieve unfertilized eggs.
Women typically undergo around two weeks of hormone treatment before the eggs are collected.
The procedure can provide an option for women who want to help maintain some of their fertility while they are younger.
Ocasio-Cortez also spoke about what she sees as a different standard applied to women in US politics compared with men.
“This is just not something that men deal with,” she added.
“Men run for office, or frankly, they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy is running for office. How old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family,’” she added.
Reflecting on her rapid rise in politics, she recalled being elected to Congress at a relatively young age.
“I got sworn into the House of Representatives when I was 29 years old,” she stated.
“There’s this flip side where you have to then grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately.”

A bizarre interaction between Elon Musk and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. on Twitter led to memes and the hashtag '#AOCLovesElon' trending online.
On Friday, the 32-year-old New York representative took apparent aim at the Tesla CEO f0llowing Musk's recent purchase of Twitter.
Writing to her 12.9 million followers, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "Tired of having to collectively stress about what explosion of hate crimes is happening bc some billionaire with an ego problem unilaterally controls a massive communication platform and skews it because Tucker Carlson or Peter Thiel took him to dinner and made him feel special."
Twitter being Twitter, responses to the politician's tweet were mixed.
However, after 50-year-old Musk spotted the tweet, rather than engage AOC in a debate over the matter, he instead responded: "Stop hitting on me, I’m really shy".
Per Bloomberg, Ocasio-Cortez reportedly did respond to Musk saying "I was talking about Zuckerberg but ok," but later deleted her response around one minute later.
Nevertheless, the odd interaction between the two figures was enough to capture the attention of fellow Twitter users, and soon enough, the hashtag '#AOCLovesElon' started trending on the social media platform.
Many of the tweets poked fun at some of Ocasio-Cortez's previous tweets, in which she claimed that Republicans were mad because they couldn't date her and it was their "deranged sexual frustrations" that were causing their "fixation" with her.

Although Musk has previously been supportive of both political sides, the billionaire has received praise from many people after announcing that he plans to make the social media platform inclusive of free speech.
In an official statement announcing the historic acquisition, Musk said: "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated."
In a recent tweet, Musk clarified his position on free speech, writing:
"By 'free speech', I simply mean that which matches the law.
"I am against censorship that goes far beyond the law.
"If people want less free speech, they will ask government to pass laws to that effect.
"Therefore, going beyond the law is contrary to the will of the people."
Expanding on his plans for the platform, Musk also mentioned in his purchase statement: "I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans."

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she's made the plunge and has decided to quit Twitter due to the amount of "negativity" on the platform.
The New York representative was answering questions on her Instagram Story on Monday when someone asked: "When will you come back to Twitter?? You're missed."
AOC responded saying she turned off all her devices and wasn't active on social media when she was infected with Covid-19 earlier this year.
"That's so funny that you bring that up," she said. "Yeah, when I got COVID I turned off all my devices, which means I wasn't really on social media that much or anything like that."
"I found that when I went to open Twitter up again, it just like wasn't making me feel... So I mean literally I would go to open the app and almost felt like anxious," she went on.
"People kinda fight and gossip and all sort of stuff so much. And there is a lot of negativity on there. But I'll be back, don't worry. Just feel like a break."
The Democrat announced on January 16 that she had contracted the virus and experienced debilitating symptoms.
"Welp, so it happened. Got COVID, probably omicron. As of today I am thankfully recovered and wrapping up quarantine, but COVID was no joke," she wrote at the time.
Despite that, AOC has decided to keep up her Instagram presence, where she has 8.5 million followers.
It comes as AOC called out "creepy" Republicans over their apparent "deranged sexual frustrations".
The New York rep was spotted alongside her boyfriend in Florida last month. But many took issue with the fact that she was photographed not wearing a mask (despite being outside), all while New York City is set to introduce strict measures, such as a vaccine mandate for private-sector workers.
Christina Pushaw, the spokesperson for Florida governor Ron DeSantis, was one of Ocasio-Cortez's critics on social media, tweeting: "Florida is so dangerous & scary that AOC decided to go on vacation in Miami this week. You know it’s a free state when even a Democrat can enjoy cocktails without being forced to show her papers or wear a mask."
However, the discussion got out of hand when conservative commentator Steve Cortes shared the image, and made a particular point to mention AOC's boyfriend's feet.
Cortes wrote: "1. If Leftists like AOC actually thought mandates and masking worked, they wouldn’t be frolicking in free FL. 2. Her guy is showing his gross pale male feet in public (not at a pool/beach) with hideous sandals."

To which, Ocasio-Cortez clearly felt like her point had been proven, as she replied: "I’m glad you felt the need to share that with the world.
"Don’t worry, this is a totally normal thought to have and share as an editor of a right-wing website, and totally doesn’t prove my point at all.
"I hear if you say it enough times you’ll actually start to believe it."
She then added: "The fact that these people are so creepy/weird yet are also the ones responsible for shaping the NEWS HEADLINES we all see in media should be really concerning.
"I don’t even want to know what knuckle-dragging thoughts these people have all day while covering women in politics."

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she was a Planned Parenthood baby.
AOC backed the non-profit - which provides vital healthcare and helps millions of people across the U.S. with a multitude of family planning methods - after it's recently been targeted by Republicans attempting to defund it.
The organization offers services such as abortions, contraception, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases.
Democratic congresswoman AOC, 31, praised the work of the healthcare provider in response to policies mentioned during a meeting of the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday.
Speaking during a House committee hearing titled Birthing While Black: Examining America’s Black Maternal Health Crisis, AOC said:
"First and foremost, I don't want to hear a single person on this committee or outside of this committee talk about valuing life when they continue to uphold the death penalty, when they continue to support policies that disproportionally incarcerate and lead to the deaths of Black men and people throughout this country and uphold an absolutely unjust medical system that exists for profit that allows people to die because they can't afford to live.
“If we want to talk about Planned Parenthood, let’s talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved and how many babies have been born because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, opened up about her family's involvement with the healthcare provider in the discussion about America’s Black maternal health crisis.
She went on: "If we want to talk about Planned Parenthood, let’s talk about how many lives Planned Parenthood has saved and how many babies have been because of the prenatal care provided by Planned Parenthood.
"If you don't believe it, and if you've never met a Planned Parenthood baby, I’m happy to let you know that I am one and that my mother received and relied on prenatal care from Planned Parenthood when she was pregnant with me."
However, as the Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy noted on Twitter, Planned Parenthood's 2019-2020 annual report shows it provided 354,871 abortion services from October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019, and just 8,626 prenatal services during that same time.
