An American Airlines pilot's recent sighting of a UFO has been confirmed by the FAA as the FBI reveals it's now "aware" of the incident.

ABC7 reports that the incident took place on February 21 36 thousand feet above New Mexico during an otherwise normal four-hour flight to Phoenix, Arizona.

According to audio published on aviation blog Deep Black Horizon, the pilot said: "Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us.

"I hate to say this but it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing moving really fast right over the top of us."

Listen to a full report on the chilling transmission below:

The blogger, Steve Douglass, accidentally intercepted the audio as he attempted to pick up the radio transmission of another aircraft.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic, he said: "It was a pure coincidence."

American Airlines went on to confirm that the audio came from flight 2292 during a debrief with the cabin crew.

Per Forbes, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has now released a short statement about the incident which reads: "A pilot reported seeing an object over New Mexico shortly after noon local time on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021. FAA air traffic controllers did not see any object in the area on their radarscopes."

Recalling the incident, Douglass said: "Talking to an ex-military pilot I know, he says that for them to see this object had to be coming at them practically head-on. So whatever it was, came fast and right at them and right over them which gave them a big enough scare they had to report it."

Douglass then revealed that at the time of the audio's recording, the military was not in the same airspace as flight 2292.

"When tests occur, the military notifies the FAA and aircraft are kept out of the area," he added. "Their schedules and strict flight lanes need to not interfere with these tests. But that's not what happened."

The FAA must then rule out a number of possibilities about what the UFO might be, but "if the military can't explain what it is, then what's flying out there that we don't know about?"
