A Baltimore bus driver has been left horrified after discovering an abandoned fetus on one of his seats.

The disturbing find was made on Saturday (June 1), along the city's Green Route in East Baltimore - which goes between Downtown Baltimore and Towson, according to authorities.

The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) bus driver was heading south on the route when he made the gruesome discovery. MTA police and BPD officers were then called to the scene.

In a statement to the US Mirror, a police spokesperson said: "I can confirm that on June 1, 2024, at approximately 12:39PM in the 2500 block of Kirk Avenue, an MTA bus driver advised that he discovered a fetus on a seat on the bus.

"MTA police and BPD officers responded. As this is an open and active investigation, no further information is available at this time."

No further information about the fetus has been revealed - including its race, gestational age, or gender.

Additionally, no suspects or persons of interest have been revealed as of this writing.

Although instances like this may be rare, the National Safe Haven Alliance reports that - in 2021 alone - 31 babies were found abandoned in dumpsters, found in backpacks, or discarded in other dangerous locations across the United States.

More than 20 of the babies were found dead.

This particular incident comes just weeks after the body of a newborn infant was found abandoned in a garbage bin at a Florida university campus.

Per Newsweek, Tampa police confirmed in that instance that the mother was eventually located and transported to a nearby hospital.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said at the time: "The Tampa Police Department reminds the community that Florida has a Safe Haven Law... There will be no questions asked, and no charges will be filed for surrendering a newborn under the Safe Haven Law unless the infant has signs of abuse or neglect."
