"I wish I could give you better news, but I think you know the truth," Sanders said. The Vermont senator noted that Joe Biden’s delegate lead had made a victory "virtually impossible".

"I have concluded that this battle for the Democratic nomination will not be successful, and so today I am announcing the suspension of my campaign," Sanders said.

In his address, he declared that "the fight for justice is what our campaign has been about" and that the Democratic party will continue to "defeat Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in modern American history."

Sanders also congratulated Biden on his victory in the Democratic primary, calling the former vice president "a very decent man".

And despite the fact Sanders is suspending his campaign, he did say that he would remain on the ballot and continue to gather delegates for future primaries, saying:

"While Joe Biden will be the nominee, we must continue working to assemble as many delegates as possible at the Democratic Convention, where we will be able to exert significant influence over the party platform and other functions."

Meanwhile, Trump has responded to the news with a tweet:

The President said: "Bernie Sanders is OUT! Thank you to Elizabeth Warren. If not for her, Bernie would have won almost every state on Super Tuesday! This ended just like the Democrats & the DNC wanted, same as the Crooked Hillary fiasco. The Bernie people should come to the Republican Party, TRADE!"
