A body language expert has analyzed Mackenzie Shirilla’s reaction in court after she was sentenced for the crash that killed her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and his friend, Davion Flanagan, claiming her facial expressions suggested that she was genuinely shocked by the outcome.
Shirilla was convicted after prosecutors argued that she had deliberately driven her car at around 100mph into a brick wall, killing both passengers while she survived.
During sentencing, the judge described her as “Hell on Wheels” while explaining why the crash was considered intentional rather than reckless.
In a breakdown of the courtroom footage, Dr. G Explains examined Shirilla’s reactions as the verdict was delivered and pointed to several moments he believed revealed surprise and denial.
Referencing the judge’s comments, he said Shirilla “morphs from a responsible driver to literal Hell on Wheels” as prosecutors argued she intentionally chose the route that ended in the fatal crash.
Dr. G then focused on one particular moment where Shirilla appeared to cover her mouth while listening to the ruling.
“Oftentimes when we see people cover their mouths, oftentimes that’s a shock reaction,” he explained. “Obviously sometimes it’s when people don’t want to say something, but that wouldn’t really make sense in this context.”
He continued: “I think that what that says is she may be shocked that this is the result. She may truly have not understood or not expected this result to happen.”
According to the expert, Shirilla may have believed the case would not end with a murder conviction, which could explain why she initially appeared unbothered throughout several parts of the proceedings.
“She may have thought that this was not going to go this way,” he said.
As the footage of the sentencing continued, the judge declared: “This was not reckless driving. This was murder.”
Moments later, the court formally found “Mackenzie Shirilla guilty of murder” in the death of Dominic Russo.
Dr. G noted that even as the judge carefully outlined the verdict, Shirilla still appeared stunned by what she was given.
“It’s interesting even then, despite the fact that the judge was very clearly laying out what was going to happen, she still seemed further shocked,” he said. “She still seems to be somewhat in denial up into the very moment that it’s told to her.”
Highlighting another reaction from the courtroom, he added: “You see her eyes got bigger and we do that when we’re surprised or when we’re shocked.”
The expert also explained that there was only limited footage available to analyze, but he believed the clips still offered insight into Shirilla’s mindset during the trial.
“I wish we had more footage to analyze so we could see more of what she was like as evidence was being presented, but it really isn’t available,” he said.
“So I thought we would just look at a little bit of body language to get some idea of what she was like so then we can talk some about the psychology of this situation.”
Dr. G concluded by saying the case continues to fascinate people because of how unusual and psychologically complex it appears.
