Multiple people were shot during an incident at a Brooklyn subway station on Tuesday morning, ABC News reports.

There were also "several undetonated devices" found, the Fire Department of New York said.

At least 13 people sustained injuries during the incident, the fire department confirmed, per NBC News. It is not known how many of these victims were shot.

According to sources, some of those injured in the attack fled the scene by jumping on a train.

Per CNN, a senior law enforcement official said that a preliminary investigation into the incident showed that a potential smoke device was detonated at the station.

The shooting started at around 8:30 AM and the fire department was called to the 36th Street subway station in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood following a report of smoke.

According to authorities, a male suspect - potentially wearing a gas mask and orange construction vest - fled and is currently at large. The man, believed to be 5-foot-5 and weigh 180 pounds, was allegedly seen throwing a device in the subway station before shooting a firearm.

Law enforcement is instructing the public to avoid the area of 36th Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, where emergency responders have attended the scene.

The NYPD said in a tweet: "Due to an investigation, avoid the area of 36th Street and 4th Avenue area in Brooklyn. Expect emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who tested positive for Covid-19, has been briefed about the mayhem that took place this morning, his spokesperson Fabien Levy confirmed.

"While we gather more information, we ask New Yorkers to stay away from this area for their safety and so that first responders can help those in need and investigate," Levy said on Twitter.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the subways, are also carrying out a probe into the incident.

President Joe Biden has been briefed about the attack and senior members of staff at the White House are in contact with Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

Our thoughts are with the people of Brooklyn at this time.
