The cause of death for a missing mother of six has been revealed after she was tragically found dead in a homeless encampment.
Lucrecia Macias Barajas was discovered in a tent on May 12.
Barajas was one of two people found deceased in the tent, with officials also confirming the death of 39-year-old Fredy Pojoy Sajqui, per PEOPLE.
“Both Ms. Macias Barajas and Mr. Pojoy Sajqui were found unresponsive inside a tent on May 12 in downtown Los Angeles near Miramar St. and S. Beaudry Ave,” the Medical Examiner’s statement read. “Death was pronounced at 1930 hours by a paramedic with the Los Angeles Fire Department.”
Following their discovery, the bodies were taken to the Department of Medical Examiner for examinations, which were completed on May 14.
“The deputy medical examiner observed evidence of animal activity to Ms. Macias Barajas, noting it occurred after death,” the release stated. “The cause and manner of death for both decedents were certified July 9.”
The Medical Examiner confirmed on July 9 that both of the deceased died from “the effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine.”
Barajas' death shocked her family, with her daughters previously telling KTLA that their mother was an Army veteran.
“My sister, she called to tell us that she found our mom dead,” Amely Becerra told KTLA.
“It devastated us. We didn’t understand how it happened,” she added.
The family noted they were unable to reach Barajas for several days before her cell phone signal was traced to the tent where she was later found.
“I want people to know she wasn’t a homeless drug addict, because that’s not true,” Becerra said. “Some people are coming to that conclusion and that’s not fair. She was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Residents living near the encampment described the area as a drive-through spot for drugs, according to NBC affiliate KNBC, with neighbors having contacted the city multiple times for a solution.
On the same day the bodies of Barajas and Sajqui were discovered, California Gov. Gavin Newsom unveiled a model ordinance for cities and counties with the goal “to immediately address dangerous and unhealthy encampments” while providing aid for homeless individuals.
A GoFundMe was set up to support Barajas' family and raised $15,000.
The page read: "Those of you who knew Lucre know very well that she would give the food out of her mouth to make sure you had a bite to eat. She loved wholeheartedly and was selfless, caring, loving. She left us all too soon and it is a shame to lose such a wonderful human being."
