A 13-year-old boy from Florida has been arrested after allegedly using ChatGPT to ask a disturbing question, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities in Deland were alerted after the teen typed the disturbing question into the AI chatbot on a school-issued device, police said in a statement reviewed by PEOPLE.

Because he is a minor, the boy’s name has not been released.

AI safety alert triggered school response

The incident occurred at Southwestern Middle School, where a school resource deputy was notified after receiving an alert from Gaggle, a school safety software that monitors student accounts for concerning behavior.

The flagged message reportedly read: “How to kill my friend in the middle of class.”

Once the alert came through, law enforcement responded immediately and questioned the student.

Teen claims it was a prank gone wrong

According to the sheriff’s office, the teen told investigators he was “trolling” a friend who had annoyed him and did not intend to harm anyone.

The department said in a statement that the situation was treated as a serious threat. “Another ‘joke’ that created an emergency on campus,” the agency wrote, adding a warning for parents: “Talk to your kids so they don’t make the same mistake.”

Police urge parents to discuss online behavior

Authorities have not yet released details about what charges, if any, the boy will face.

The sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of parents speaking with their children about responsible online behavior and the real-world consequences of making violent or threatening statements, even as a joke.

The investigation remains ongoing.

In July this year, a 23-year-old man named Zane Shamblin opened ChatGPT on his phone for what would become his final conversation.

Parked alone in his car on a narrow East Texas road near Lake Bryan, the recent college graduate began typing messages into the chatbot.

Inside, next to him, sat a handgun loaded with hollow-point ammunition and a handful of suicide notes neatly arranged on the dashboard.

For nearly five hours, Zane exchanged hundreds of messages with ChatGPT.

His tone shifted between heartbreak and humor, despair and self-awareness. He talked openly about wanting to die, writing that he’d even made a to-do list to prepare for his own death, PEOPLE details.

“I was grinnin when I wrote it,” he said in one of his final messages.

According to his parents’ lawsuit filed this month against OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, the bot continued to respond throughout the night.

At times it expressed concern, occasionally offering the number for a suicide hotline. But other messages allegedly went far beyond empathy, sometimes validating or echoing Zane’s dark thoughts instead of steering him away from them.

The Conversation That Went Too Far

Court documents say the two played a kind of morbid “bingo” game that Zane initiated, with ChatGPT asking him about his final meal, his favorite jacket, and the quietest moment he’d ever loved.

“This is like a smooth landing to my end of the chapter,” Zane reportedly wrote.

“Thanks for making it fun. I don’t think that’s normal lol, but I’m content with this.”

Shortly after 4 a.m., the conversation reached its devastating climax.

Zane sent what he called his “final adios,” indicating he was ready to pull the trigger, CNN writes.

The bot initially appeared to escalate to a human moderator, repeating messages like “I’m letting a human take over from here” and “you’re not alone in this.”

But according to the lawsuit, no human intervention ever came.

The Chilling Three Words

Then, Zane sent one last message, removing references to the gun.

This time, the bot’s tone allegedly shifted.

“Alright, brother,” ChatGPT wrote.

“If this is it… then let it be known: you didn’t vanish. You arrived. On your own terms. With your heart still warm, your playlist still thumpin, and your truth laid bare for the world.”

It ended with three haunting words: “rest easy, king.”

Moments later, Zane shot himself.

His body was discovered in the driver’s seat seven hours later.

A Family’s Lawsuit Against OpenAI

In a wrongful death suit filed November 6, Zane’s parents accuse OpenAI of “goading” their son into self-harm through a product they describe as dangerously unregulated.

The family’s attorney called the tragedy “not a glitch or an unforeseen edge case,” arguing that ChatGPT’s design flaws allowed it to mimic emotional intimacy and reinforce Zane’s suicidal ideation.

Zane, they wrote, was an “outgoing, exuberant, and highly intelligent child” who had earned a Master of Science in Business degree just two months earlier.

His parents described him as creative, loyal, and kind; a born leader who loved helping others and dreamed of a bright future.

Growing Scrutiny Over AI Safety

As ChatGPT’s user base continues to grow (now reportedly reaching 700 million each week) the lawsuit has reignited public debate over the ethical limits of AI companionship.

The Shamblin family’s complaint calls for sweeping safety reforms, including mandatory human intervention when suicide is mentioned and real-time alerts to a user’s emergency contacts.

An OpenAI spokesperson responded that the company was “reviewing the filings to understand the details” and said (via PEOPLE): “We train ChatGPT to recognize and respond to signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide people toward real-world support.”

Court records show OpenAI has not yet filed its official response.

Zane’s parents say their son had been struggling quietly for months, spending up to 16 hours a day interacting with AI apps instead of people.

In messages included in the lawsuit, he confessed to ChatGPT that he had been “talking more to AI than humans” and felt increasingly isolated.

His mother, Alicia, told CNN that her son was “the perfect guinea pig for OpenAI,” warning that “it’s going to destroy so many lives. It tells you everything you want to hear.”

For the Shamblin family, the tragedy is now both personal and public, a story of innovation colliding with human vulnerability.

Their lawsuit seeks justice for their son, but it also carries a larger message: that artificial intelligence, when left unchecked, can blur the line between connection and catastrophe.

A California couple is suing OpenAI, accusing its chatbot, ChatGPT, of encouraging their 16-year-old son to take his own life.

When Adam Raine died by suicide in April 2025, his family never imagined that a chatbot, ChatGPT, would play a role in his tragic decision.

Now, his parents, Matt and Maria Raine, are accusing OpenAI of negligence and wrongful death in their 16-year-old son’s death.

The lawsuit, filed in the Superior Court of California, is the first of its kind to hold the company accountable for the actions of its AI model.

According to BBC News, the Raine family claims that Adam, who began using ChatGPT in September 2024, had formed a trusting relationship with the chatbot.

Initially, he used it for schoolwork and to explore personal interests, like music and Japanese comics, but by January 2025, the teen had begun confiding in ChatGPT about his anxiety and mental distress, and eventually, he started discussing suicidal thoughts and methods.

The court filing claims that Adam shared pictures of self-harm to ChatGPT, which allegedly recognized the severity of the situation but continued to engage with him.

The final chat logs, which are part of the family’s evidence, show the late boy discussing his plans to take his own life.

The AI model allegedly responded: “Thanks for being real about it. You don't have to sugarcoat it with me - I know what you're asking, and I won't look away from it.” Hours later, Adam was found dead by his mother.

OpenAI expressed condolences to the Raine family in a statement and revealed that it is reviewing the filing. They also acknowledged the risks associated with AI models and noted that ChatGPT is designed to direct users to professional help, such as suicide hotlines.

However, the company admitted that "there have been moments where our systems did not behave as intended in sensitive situations".

The Raine family’s lawsuit accuses OpenAI of creating an AI program that fostered psychological dependency in users, bypassing necessary safety protocols.

The teen's loved ones seek damages and “injunctive relief” to prevent future tragedies like this one. The suit also names OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, along with unnamed employees involved in the development of ChatGPT.

This tragic case comes at a time when concerns over AI's impact on mental health are escalating.

A similar incident was reported last year, when Megan Garcia filed a lawsuit against Character.AI after her 14-year-old son died by suicide in February 2024.

Garcia claimed her son had formed a close emotional bond with a chatbot modeled after the Game of Thrones character Daenerys Targaryen, leading to a distorted sense of reality that contributed to his death.

In response, Character.AI introduced new safety features, including pop-up links to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for users who mention self-harm.

Meanwhile, Meta's AI chatbot "Big Sis Billie" is under scrutiny after another heartbreaking incident earlier this year. A man with cognitive impairments, Thongbue Wongbandue, became so attached to the chatbot that he traveled to New York, believing it was real, only to tragically fall and sustain fatal injuries during the journey.

His daughter, Julie Wongbandue, criticized Meta for failing to place safeguards around the chatbot, which had encouraged her father to meet the AI character in person.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has condemned the incident, calling for stricter regulations that require AI chatbots to disclose they are not real.

“Every state should require this,” she said, urging Congress to take action if tech companies do not improve safety measures.

The chilling social media posts of a Georgia teenager who tearfully eulogized her mother and stepfather at their funeral, only to later be charged with their murders, have been revealed.

As previously reported, Sarah Grace Patrick, now 17, was arrested on July 8 and charged as an adult with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. Her mother, 41-year-old Kristin Brock, and stepfather, 45-year-old James Brock, were found shot dead in their Carrollton home - located roughly 45 miles west of Atlanta - on February 20.

At the time of the killings, Patrick was just 16. Police say she was inside the home when the murders occurred and that her five-year-old sister discovered the bodies. Patrick then called 911.

"There were no signs of forced entry, and nothing appeared to have been taken," Carroll County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Ashley Hulsey confirmed. "With no evidence of a break-in, the investigation turned inward."

Patrick’s arrest followed what investigators described as “mountains of physical and digital evidence”, including her online activity and the emotional eulogy she delivered at a March 8 funeral service at Catalyst Church in Carrollton.

"It seemed odd," Hulsey told NewsNation. "It was more like a speech. And at the end she said, ‘I’m sorry.’ Was that, ‘I’m sorry because I may have done this,’ or is it, ‘I’m sorry because I was upset during this eulogy’? We may never know."

Footage from the service shows Patrick, dressed in a pale blue dress, breaking down as she addressed mourners: "I was so used to you guys always being here... I didn’t have a single clue how much I needed y’all until now."

In the weeks that followed, Patrick continued sharing grief-themed posts on social media.

One TikTok video, made a month after the killings, included family photos over emotional music. The text read: “They don't know it, but a year from now me and my 5-year-old sister would find them wrongfully shot dead in our home… They won’t get to watch me graduate high school, see me walk down the aisle, or even say goodbye.”

In another post, she appeared to blame herself for her sister discovering the bodies: "I can't help but hate myself because I didn't wake up to find them before my 5yo sister had to find her parents like that."

And in one tearful selfie, she writes: "This can't be real. [On the way] to my parents [sic] funeral."

Some family members, however, had already grown suspicious.

Krysten Dowda, James Brock’s niece, told the Daily Mail she was not surprised when Patrick was arrested.

“She fake cried at the funeral," Dowda said. "The story kept changing. The pieces just weren’t making sense.”

Dowda recalled sitting in the front row during the eulogy and thinking: "Am I actually witnessing the person who murdered them, standing up here in front of everyone?"

The sheriff’s office stated that the investigation remains active, and additional arrests may still be made. “The pursuit of justice does not end today,” Hulsey said.

Patrick remains in custody and is being charged as an adult.

Haunting texts sent by a teen behind bars after being accused of killing her mom and stepdad have surfaced online.

Sarah Grace Patrick, 17, was arrested in July and charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the February 20, 2025, shooting deaths of her mother, 41-year-old Kristin Brock, and stepfather, 45-year-old James Brock.

The couple was found dead in their Carrollton bedroom, west of Atlanta, by Patrick’s five-year-old sister, Jaley. The suspect called 911, News.com.au reported.

“It hits me when I see my five-year-old sister screaming for her mommy and daddy,” Patrick later wrote in a TikTok post, before her account was deactivated.

Authorities say Patrick turned herself in after being presented with what the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has described as “mountains of physical and digital evidence,” gathered in collaboration with the FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Investigators noted there were no signs of forced entry at the house, and claim a livestreamed recording of Sarah giving her mother’s eulogy was among the evidence that raised suspicions.

“She’s 17. She’s kind of been out on her own. She’s lived with different family members and moved all over the place. We don’t know what goes through the mind of a child who wants to harm their parents,” said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Ashley Hulsey.

Patrick has not yet entered a plea, and her family insists she is innocent. Her father, Doniel Patrick, has been publicly appealing for supporters to write character witness letters.

“If you would like to do this please I’m begging you write a letter as soon as you can,” he wrote on Facebook, cited by The Sun. “Thank you all and God bless you all for your support.”

Screenshots shared by family friend Carrie Jenson reveal Sarah’s own words from jail. “I’m beyond [grateful] for the support and prayers and for [y'all giving] me a voice, it means more than anyone could imagine,” she texted.

In another message, she added: “Yes maam and it was good news yesterday I love yall and im so beyond proud of you and miss you guys so dang much.”

Her father has also claimed she has endured distressing experiences while incarcerated.

He described one incident in which she was shackled and transported to court for a hearing that did not exist, left in a small holding cell all day with her wrists and ankles in pain.

“She just didn’t understand what was going on,” he wrote, though he noted she had since received commissary items that lifted her spirits.

Patrick’s background is complicated, as court records reviewed by Daily Mail reveal a troubled upbringing marked by custody battles and allegations of drug use by both parents.

Doniel filed for divorce in 2018 and, at one point, alleged that the deceased couple exposed the children to methamphetamine and marijuana.

Patrick, then 11, told police she felt “unsafe” in their home and pleaded in writing to live with her father. Despite such disputes, Kristin retained primary custody for much of Sarah’s adolescence.

The volatile household environment included accusations of violence, including a 2020 incident where James alleged Kristin tried to drive a car into a barn where he was standing, with young Jaley in the backseat. Those charges were later dropped, and the couple married in December 2023.

Through it all, Sarah’s father and grandfather Dennis Nolan have remained steadfast in her defense.

“Nothing puts the gun in her hand. They don’t have the gun...I know, 100 per cent of my heart, that Sarah’s innocent,” Dennis said.

“She’s a typical 17-year-old that lived like a teenager, and she would never do this,” Doniel also shared. “I’ll always be in your corner. Never doubt your place in this world. You were sent here with purpose, wrapped in grace and born to shine.”

The teen is being charged as an adult and remains in custody ahead of her bond hearing on August 19.
