Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals will not be taking place in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, a health official in California has said, according to The Guardian.

The festivals had already been postponed from April to October in hopes that the worst of the Covid-19 crisis would have passed by the autumn.

Now, as the US passes two million coronavirus cases, it appears that festival bosses have reconsidered their initial decision.

Cameron Kaiser, a public health official in Riverside County, has said that he would not feel "comfortable" with the festivals going ahead amid fears of a second wave of coronavirus cases later in the year, per the publication.

"I am concerned as indications grow that Covid-19 could worsen in the fall,” Kaiser explained. "Given the projected circumstances and potential, I would not be comfortable moving forward."

"Events like Coachella and Stagecoach would fall under [California] Governor [Gavin] Newsom’s Stage 4, which he has previously stated would require treatments or a vaccine to enter. Given the projected circumstances and potential, I would not be comfortable moving forward."

"These decisions are not taken lightly with the knowledge that many people will be impacted. My first priority is the health of the community," he added.

Coachella - which is one of the world's biggest music festivals, and takes place each year in Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert - was due to be headlined by Frank Ocean, Travis Scott, and Rage Against the Machine.

Stagecoach, the country music festival, is held annually at Indio's Empire Polo Club. The lineup included: Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Eric Church, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lil Nas X, and Dustin Lynch.
