US Representative Lauren Boebert has responded publicly after her 20-year-old son Tyler was cited for child abuse following an incident involving her infant grandson.

According to a July 11 court summons obtained by multiple outlets, Tyler Boebert received a misdemeanor citation for child abuse categorized as “criminal negligence” by the Windsor Police Department in Colorado.

Authorities confirmed "no death or injury" occurred in the incident, but further details about the circumstances have not been released, PEOPLE reports.

“No injury or physical abuse,” says Boebert

In a statement to PEOPLE and Newsweek, Boebert, 38, said the event "stems from a miscommunication on monitoring my young grandson that recently led to him getting out of our house.”

She added: “Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year.”

The congresswoman emphasized that there was “absolutely no injury or physical abuse involved” and said the family had already met with Child Protective Services (CPS) to address the matter.

“I am confident this is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family,” she said.

A string of past legal issues

The child abuse citation is the latest in a series of legal troubles for Tyler, who became a father at 17. Earlier this year, he was arrested in connection to a spree of thefts and vehicle trespassing incidents in Rifle, Colorado, The Independent reports.

In February 2024, he faced more than 20 charges, including four felony counts of criminal possession of ID documents for multiple victims and one felony count of conspiracy to commit a felony.

Ultimately, Tyler pleaded guilty to one count of attempted identity theft in a plea deal that dismissed the remaining charges.

As part of the agreement, he received a two-year deferred judgment, 80 hours of community service, and a ban on using controlled substances. He is still serving that probationary sentence, and it remains unclear whether the recent child abuse citation could be considered a violation.

Tyler is due in Weld County Court on September 8.

Boebert: “I will never give up on him”

This is not the first time Boebert has spoken out in defense of her son. Following his February arrest, she issued a statement expressing heartbreak over his struggles and the media scrutiny he’s faced.

“I love my son Tyler, who has been through some very difficult, public challenges for a young man and the subject of attention that he didn't ask for,” she said. “It breaks my heart to see my child struggling… I will never give up on him and I will continue to be there for him.”

She added: “As an adult and father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for poor decisions just like any other citizen.”

Family challenges in the public eye

Tyler's legal issues have unfolded amid a turbulent year for the Boebert family.

In January 2024, Tyler called police to report that his father, Jayson Boebert — Lauren’s ex-husband — had allegedly assaulted him by pushing him to the ground and pressing a thumb into his mouth. Jayson was later arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief following a separate alleged altercation involving the congresswoman.

Lauren Boebert filed for divorce from Jayson in spring 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair share four sons together: Tyler, Brody, Kaydon, and Roman.

Despite the ongoing legal and personal challenges, Boebert, who previously represented Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, successfully ran for office in the state’s more conservative 4th District in 2024. She remains a vocal figure within the Republican Party and a high-profile supporter of former President Donald Trump.

What’s next?

While the details of the July 11 incident remain under wraps, the citation and upcoming court date add another layer to Tyler Boebert’s ongoing legal narrative. Whether this latest case impacts his probation status will likely be addressed during his court appearance in September.

For now, the congresswoman insists the family has handled the situation internally and is focused on maintaining a safe and stable environment.

“Our family has already met with CPS to ensure we are continuing to provide a safe environment for my boys and my grandson,” Boebert said. “This is a one-time incident that we have addressed as a family.”
